For the past several years, the food waste issue has been paying attention not only in Korea but also around the world. In particular, the first and second topics of the UN Food System Summit that are scheduled on September 2021 are the accessibility to safe food and the practice of sustainable consumption, respectively. They are related to food waste reduction and are receiving a lot of international attention. Existing food waste-related studies mainly focus on food waste reduction at meal or restaurant services, food waste treatment methods and recycling, and the effects of dietary and nutrition education on food waste reduction. On the other hand, this study investigates the factors that affect the amount of food waste in households, which account for the largest part of the total amount of food waste. This study also analyzes the changes in the amount of food waste in a situation where online food purchases increase under the COVID-19. This study starts with a question about whether there is a relationship between the increase in food waste and the online food purchases around the world due to the impact of COVID-19. We examine a hypothesis that an online food purchases leads to expand Household Food Waste. Our study used Korea Rural Economic Institute's 2020 Food Consumption Behavior Survey data. This study employed ordered logit model instead of ordinary least square (OLS) because our dependent variable, the quantity of food waste, was an ordered categorical variable. STATA 17.0 was used for statistical analysis. Examples include the age of the main purchaser of food, the average monthly household income, the number of household members living together, whether a household consists of one-person, the frequency of food purchases, whether to buy food online, whether to use early morning delivery, and whether to purchase cleaning/cutting products. the frequency of home meal replacement (HMR) purchase, the frequency of eating out, the frequency of delivery and take-out food orders, whether RFID is used, the awareness of environmentally friendly agri-food consumption, and whether to buys more foods for eligibility of free shipping orders also affect household's food waste. In particular, variables related the online food purchases (such as whether to use early morning delivery, whether to purchase food online, and whether to buys additional foods for eligibility of free shipping orders) had a statistically significant positive effect on the food waste change at home. It implies that the hypothesis established in this study was adopted. The contribution of the study is to present evidence that the relationship between the online food purchases and the increase in food waste is statistically significant in a situation where online shopping continues to increase. In addition, it is meaningful to offer the direction of food waste reduction in households, the largest source of food waste, by revealing the factors affecting the amount of food waste at home, the largest source of food waste.
