The purpose of this study is to improve language skills of school aged children of multicultural families whose language development is slower for their chronological age through art therapy using picture books and to prevent problems resulting from their delayed speech.
In order to examine the effectiveness of art therapy utilizing picture books on children with multicultral family backgrounds, this study focused on the changes in the following three aspects:
1) receptive and expressive vocabulary
2) sentence comprehension abilities
3) language problem-solving skills
This research was carried out on a second grader from a multicultural family in D elementary school in B city. The researcher designed a program that combined picture books and art therapy mediums and provided the subject with two sessions a week for 13 weeks, 25 sessions in total. Each session lasted for 60 minutes, and different picture books and activity record sheets were used to observe the change in the subject.
In order to verify the effectiveness of this experiment, the researcher tested the subject's receptive and expressive vocabulary, sentence comprehension abilities, and language problem-solving skills for pre- and post- comparison.
The analysis showed that picture books were useful mediums for art therapy and helped improve the subject's language skills.
Previous studies on children from multicultural families mostly concentrated on their emotional and behavioral aspects, such as self-esteem, ego-resiliency, school maladjustment, peer conflict or lack of sociality.
This study suggests that art therapy programs that actively make use of picture books as a art therapy medium can effectively improve language abilities of children from multicultural families.
