The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of different kettlebell mass (30 %, 40 %, and 50 % of the body mass) on kinematics and kinetic variables of kettlebell swing. Total of 16 healthy male who had at least 1 year of kettlebell training experience were participated in this study (age: 31.69±3.46 yrd., height: 173.38±4.84 cm, body mass: 74.53±6.45 kg). In this study, a 13-segments whole-body model (upper trunk, lower trunk, pelvis, both side of humerus, forearm, thigh, shank and foot) was used and 26 reflection markers were attached to the body to identify the segments. A 3-dimensional motion analysis with 8 infrared cameras and 4 channeled EMG was performed to find the effect of kettlebell mass on its swing. To verify the kettlebell mass effect, a one-way ANOVA with a repeated measure was used and the statistical significance level was set at α=.05. The results of this study are as follows.
First, as the kettlebell mass increased, significantly increased hip, knee, and ankle joint angles were found. Insignificantly increased ROM of knee and ankle joint also were found.
Second, as the kettlebell mass increased, significantly increased shoulder and knee angular velocities were found.
Third, as the kettlebell mass increased, significantly increased trunk angle was found.
Fourth, as the kettlebell mass increased, significantly increased kettlebell swing trajectory was found.
Fifth, as the kettlebell mass increased, significantly increased gluteus maximus, hamstring, and rectus femoris muscles activations were found.
According to the results of this study, at 40 % and 50 % mass, decreased hip extension, increased knee extension and increased trunk flexion were shown compared with those of 30 % mass. Also, 50 % mass revealed greater hamstrings muscle activity than that of 30 % and 40 %. These results can be predicted that 40 % and 50 % of the weight does not effectively stimulate the target muscle of the exercise and has a potential risk of injury. Therefore, it may be suggested that a beginner starting kettlebell exercises with kettlebell mass as 30 % of his/her body mass. Even high leveled performer, it is also suggested to perform kettlebell swing with caution when swing with 40 % and 50 % of the body mass, preventing potential injury risk.
