The fashion industry creates enormous value and has a serious social and environmental impact. If social opinion is formed about the environmental pollution caused by the fashion industry, apparel companies will be more interested in sustainability and eco-friendly production. In addition, with the development of society, more and more consumers are concerned about responsible brand business and environmental protection. China, the world's second largest clothing market, is concerned about the environmental impact of textile waste. Currently, in China, both apparel suppliers and consumers are interested in sustainable fashion. China's rapidly developing Internet and Internet environment are also affecting consumption patterns by age in China. In particular, WeChat, a social media, is China's national social media, which is changing the daily life of Chinese consumers. As China's economic power has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, consumption perceptions have changed significantly by generation. In particular, Generation MZ knows how to use Internet networks skillfully, and Generation X & Baby Boomers are unfamiliar with the Internet, but they are slowly starting to use the Internet. Both groups of consumers are expected to show certain differences in their purchasing behavior under the influence of WeChat. Rational behavior theory is one of the most important research models in consumer behavior research. In previous studies on sustainable clothing consumption, rational behavior theory was used a lot, and research on sustainable clothing consumption was conducted by increasing variables such as consumer environment-related knowledge and collectivist culture. Many scholars have conducted. However, there have been very few studies on how to influence purchasing behavior after being influenced by others through social media such as WeChat. Currently, there are many studies on sustainable clothing consumption behavior of Chinese consumers, but research on sustainable clothing behavior by age group in China is very limited. Therefore, this paper studies the differences in the decision-making process of sustainable clothing purchase behavior when Chinese consumers by age group use WeChat. In this paper, WeChat usage and cognition are considered as antecedent variables for the influence of WeChat peers. In WeChat, peer influence acts as an antecedent variable for subjective norms and attitudes. Subjective norms and attitudes are used as antecedents of purchase intention. Unlike most previous studies, the rational behavior theory model is expanded to examine whether subjective norms affect consumers' purchasing behavior, particularly whether there are differences by age group. The data collection period for this study is from November 15, 2021 to November 29, 2021. As for the data collection method, an online survey was conducted randomly among 10~80 households living in China by installing a questionnaire on Sojump's China-specialized survey site and distributing it in the form of a link to nearby acquaintances. Among them, 426 valid questionnaires were collected through the data analysis process of the thesis, and frequency analysis, reliability analysis, and exploratory factor analysis were performed by applying SPSS 26.0 for data analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis using AMOS 25.0, multi-group analysis and Path validation was done. According to the results of this study, there is a marked difference in the following two pathways by generation according to the results of multi-group analysis. The influence of wechat usage and detection on the social influence of people around wechat on wechat was greater in Generation X & Baby Boomers than Generation MZ, and in Generation X & Baby Boomers, the influence of wechat usage and detection was greater. In the effect of subjective norms on attitude, Generation X and Baby Boomers received less than Generation MZ, and in Generation MZ, subjective norms had a greater effect on attitude. Based on the results of this study, the following theoretical proposals can be made. We found that the degree of influence of WeChat varies by age group, and that middle-aged consumers are particularly affected by WeChat. This directly proved that the research significance of the comparison between the two groups and the analysis of social media as individuals according to the subject of this study is significant. Therefore, further research on WeChat, China's largest social media, is possible in future research. In addition, by extending the TRA model, it was proved that subjective norms affect consumer attitudes by age group. In future studies, the TRA model can be extended to examine the effects of subjective norms on attitudes in the process of sustainable consumption. In particular, it is possible to study how consumer differences by age group appeared. Next, we can provide you with marketing advice such as: In this study of MZ generation consumers, the use of WeChat did not affect sustainable clothing purchases, and only subjective norms were found to influence consumers' purchases through attitudes. Therefore, in order to raise subjective norms, brand operators can promote environmental protection-related contents by using influencers (KOL) or entertainers who are well-known among target customers as promotional models to increase product interest. It should also play a pilot role to increase consumer engagement while further enhancing the overall environmental awareness of the MZ generation.
