In this study, methods for the efficient and selective leaching and materialization of lithium compounds were therefore conducted. In general, lithium is recovered in the last stage of the recovery of valuable metals in spent lithium secondary batteries, so carbonates and nitrates from lithium-containing oxides such as LCO (LiCoO2), NCM (LiNixMnyCozO2), LMO (LiMn2O4), and LFP (LiFePO4) were investigated, and basic experiments were carried out using the Taguchi method to identify the factors affecting each process. After that, the optimal leaching and materializing of lithium compounds was obtained using detailed experiments to evaluate the influence of parameters such as heat treatment temperature, time, and leaching solid–liquid ratio. Carbon in powder is used in the carbonation process to reduce lithium-containing oxides such as LiNixMnyCozO2 and LiCoO2. At this time, Li is converted to Li2CO3, and it is possible to recover the lithium compound by selective leaching it in deionized water. Therefore, an investigation was carried out to evaluate the effects of heat treatment atmosphere, temperature, time, and solid–liquid ratio on selective lithium leaching using carbonation. X-ray diffraction was used to examine the phase change of the lithium-containing oxide in response to the various heat treatment conditions, and an inductively coupled plasma analysis was used to examine the leaching rate at various solid–liquid ratios. After heat treatment at 700 °C for 1 hour in nitrogen ambient, 54.74 % of lithium leaching occurred when leaching at 1:30 solid–liquid ratio. When heat treatment was performed at a temperature higher than that, the leaching rate decreased sharply owing to the decomposition of Li2CO3 into Li2O and CO2 at a temperature of 723 °C or higher, then their subsequent change into LiCoO2 by re-reaction with Li2O and CoO. The recovery of lithium carbonate was confirmed through an XRD analysis of the powder obtained by drying the leaching solution. In the nitrification process, nitric acid is converted into nitrate compounds such as LiNO3, Ni(NO3)2, Co(NO3)2, and Mn(NO3)2. The nitrate compounds other than lithium nitrate are then oxidized through roasting. Therefore, metal oxide in cell powder cannot be leached in deionized water, but lithium nitrate is easily leached in water. The effects of pretreatment, nitric acid deposition, roasting, and solid–liquid ratio on the selective leaching of lithium using the nitration process were investigated. As a result, pretreatment at 600 °C, nitric acid deposition at 2 ml/g, and roasting at 275 °C were found to realize a lithium recovery of more than 80%. As a result of analysis of the powder through drying after solid-liquid separation, it was confirmed that lithium nitrate powder had a purity greater than 99%.
