Effects of Sensory Integration Therapy on Occupational Performance and Participation in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder : A Case Study원문보기

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of sensory integration therapy on occupational performance and participation in children with autism spectrum disorder. The subject of this study is one 9-year-old child with autism spectrum disorder, and the sensory integration therapy was performed to him twice a week for 50 minutes for 4 weeks. The sensory integration intervention consisted of activities centered on tactile, proprioceptive, and vestibular sensory. The Canadian occupational performance measure to determine the subject's occupational performance, the short sensory profile to determine the sensory processing ability, and postural movement and praxis Clinical observation and self-stimulation behaviors frequency were measured and after conducting the school function assessment to find out participation, the results of comparing the differences in pre- and post-scores were described. After sensory integration intervention, the frequency of repeated vocalizations during self-stimulation behaviors of the subject decreased, the total score of the short sensory profile increased, and postural movement and praxis Clinical observation regarding also showed changes. In addition, scores on physical tasks and cognitive/behavioral tasks were improved in school functional assessment. It was confirmed that these changes affected the score of occupational performance. In future research, continuous efforts are required to generalize the effectiveness of occupational performance and participation in sensory integration therapy for children with autism spectrum disorder.
