Objective: Early vocalization is a very important milestone in a child's early speech-language development. Among them, canonical vocalization forms the basis of words and functions as an important factor in predicting early speech-language development. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the development of speech sounds based on canonical vocalizations among the Early vocalizations of 6-8 months, 12-14 months, and 18-20 months. In addition, based on the vocalizations corresponding to words in the total vocalizations at 18-20 months, the phonological characteristics of the Early vocalizations at 6-8 months and 12-14 months and the phonological characteristics of the words at 18-20 months were compared, and investigated common characteristics and continuity and individual differences.
Methods: fourteen typical children aged 6-8 months participated in this study. the children's vocalization data were collected three times at 6-month intervals from 6-8 months to 18-20 months of age. The frequency and percentage of canonical vocalization, vocalization length, consonant production, and phonological structure inventories were analyzed from all-day recordings at home and compared among 6-8months, 12-14months and 18-20months. Also, based on the words separated from the Ealry vocalizations of 18-20 months, the relationship between the early vocalizations and the words, and individual differences were investigated.
Results: As a result of investigating the development of speech sounds in early vocalizations according to the increase of the month, canonical vocalizations showed a significant increase with the increase of the month. There was no significant difference in vocalization length between the group of the month. In the consonant inventories, the number increased as the increasing age, and the rate of consonant production by articulation manner and place increased stops and decreased nasals at 12-14 months of age, while affricates increased only at 18-20 months of age. In addition, labials decreased at 12-14 months, the palatal increased only at 18-20 months, and the alveolar sound showed a significant difference with increasing age, but there was no significant difference between group of month. phonological structure inventories showed a significant increase as increasing month, and gradually showed various and complex structures. As a result of investigating the common characteristics of early vocalizations and words, common characteristics were found in nasals, stops and labial, alveolar, and velar. In phonological structure inventories, the types of phonological structures that appeared in the early vocalization were also continuously shown in the words of 18-20 months of age. as factors predicting the number of consonant inventories of words at 18-20 months of age, there were the rate of canonical vocalizations at 6-8 months and the number of consonant inventories at 12-14 months of early vocalizations. a factor predicting the number of different words in the words of 18-20 months of age, there was a rate of canonical vocalization at 6-8 months of early vocalizations. As a result of investigating the inventories of consonants and phonological structures for each child, there was a limit to confirming the continuity of individual differences, but the appearance of the low-used inventories and the absence of the high-used inventories in certain children showed differences between individuals.
Condition: This study supported the understanding of the phonological characteristics of infants and toddlers and providing developmental indicators by investigating typical phonological characteristics in the early vocalizations of typical children. In addition, it was confirmed that the phonological development characteristics of early vocalization were continuous in words, and accordingly, the necessity of systematically evaluating the phonological development in the early vocalizations of infants and young children was suggested. Finally, by identifying individual differences for each child, it was understood that there are individual differences in the development of children in addition to universal characteristics, suggesting the need for an individual developmental approach for children.
