This study begins with the following question: "Does vocal education in the musical major at a Korean university work well for a professional musical actor performing on a stage?" In order to answer the question, this thesis analysed the curriculum for Korean universities that operate musical majors, and the current status and problems related to vocal education, in specific, were contemplated. It especially focused on Dankook University, Myongji University, Seokyeong University, and Hansei University, which all have musical major that does not belong to a course of dramatics, and Dongseo University, the first four-year university to establish a musical department, among 36 two (2) to three (3) -year and four (4) - year universities in Seoul and the metropolitan area.
Since the establishment of the first musical major at Paekche Arts University in 1999, the fast development of musical education at universities over the past 20 years is based on the development of the musical industry. In a similar period, overseas licensed musicals prospered, especially in large theatres in Korea, and creative musicals of different sizes were also developed based on the expansion of the scale of this industry. Korean musicals now have expanded as one of the largest fields of the performing arts industry and that phenomenon increased social and public interest. As a result, the need to cultivate musical-related professionals came up on the surface.
In addition to the survey on the curriculum status of Korean universities, the curriculum and status of five major four-year universities in Korea were analyzed in more depth. As a result of the analysis, the following facts were found. Currently, the proportion of the vocal education major in musical education at Korean universities is not insufficient compared to acting and dance education. However, it can be seen that there are still many unsatisfactory points in terms of subject diversity and class contents.
Following the analysis of Korean universities, several universities that provide excellent musical major education among foreign universities (UK, US, and Japan) where the musical industry has developed were selected and surveyed on the curriculum and faculty of each school. As a result of comparing and analyzing the curriculum of five major four-year universities in Korea and some famous foreign universities, it was possible to derive subjects commonly pursued by the major department.
Based on the above analysis, a ‘standard curriculum’ related to vocals which should be basically implemented to train professional musical actors at each university was presented. Six subjects, as standard subjects, were presented, starting with sight-singing and music dictation, vocal, musical ensemble, chorus, repertoire analysis, and piano. Through them, basic competencies necessary for musical actors can be nurtured in the major curriculum at a university. And more professional vocal education is required in order for students to become an actor who can analyse various repertoires including musical ensembles, chorus and understand works after solidifying the basic skills. Therefore, if professional and continuous education is implemented based on these vocal-related subjects, it is expected that students will become professional musical actors.
Study on musical major education at Korean universities is still immature. The reality is that it is not easy to even grasp precise statistics and current status data. For strengthening the competitiveness of each university which operates a musical major and continuing to improve the musical industry, standards for professional vocal education should be established through diverse researches and supports in the future.
