This study investigated the effects of blues-focused improvisation on self-efficacy in adolescents at a community child center. The participants were four adolescents aged 13 to 18, who used a community child center located in City P, South Korea. This was a single case study involving a small group of cases. The intervention period was from November 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021, and a 15-session intervention was performed once a week for 80 minutes per session. The program was conducted in four stages, and its contents consisted of blues-focused improvisation to induce the participants to have successful experiences through exploring the instrument, playing the instrument interchangeably, and adjusting the difficulty level of performance. The pre- and post-event self-efficacy was measured for comparison using the self-efficacy scale. Changes by stage were analyzed by the self-efficacy behavior observation scale. The results indicated that the overall score for self-efficacy increased in all those who participated in the blues-focused improvisation program, and the scores for the subdomains such as confidence, self-regulation efficacy, and preferred task difficulty level, increased. In addition, positive changes in language and behavior were found in the analysis using the self-efficacy behavior observation scale. Spontaneity and activeness in musical expression were also found to gradually increase compared to the baseline. Specifically, the participants’ technique, number of notes, dynamics, and tone control with respect to blues-focused improvisation were improved. From these results, I found that musical self-efficacy was also improved, and that blues-focused improvisation was a positive intervention strategy for improving self-efficacy in adolescents at the community child center. In addition, these results suggest that such improvisation can be used as a therapeutic medium in the clinical music therapy field. I hope that the use of blues-focused improvisation will be expanded as a positive intervention that can help improve self-efficacy in adolescents in the community.
