This study intended to explore in-depth, the relationship between participation in the elderly job project and successful aging in the era of super-aging. The main purpose of this study was to examine how the lives of the elderly have changed before and after participating in the Elderly Job Project. For that case, 26 elderly people who are participating in the elderly job project were selected for the study. In-depth interviews were conducted on their experiences of participating in jobs for the elderly group and changes in their lives in aging time. The researcher conducted an in-depth interview survey at least once, for a period of 5 months from November 2020 to March 2021. The data collected through an interview were analysed based on the grounded theory. Data analysis was conducted in the order of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding, which are analysis methods suggested by Strauss and Corbin (2001). In each coding stage, data collection and data analysis were performed simultaneously. Repeated comparative analysis was performed to collect additional data according to the analysis results.
The specific results of this study are as follows. Retirement preparation stage was a stage before participation in the project, and preparation for retirement was insufficient in one or more areas, such as economic independence or participation in social activities, because systematic preparation for elderly was not possible. As a result, elderly were experiencing various crises such as fear, anxiety, and depression. In the cognitive stage, it was meant to be introduced from personal relationships such as friends, acquaintances, neighbours, or from public institutions about the job opportunities for the elderly. It refers as a difficult situation that appeared in the early stages of adaptation after deciding to participate in the elderly job project in the crisis stage. By overcoming this stage, one can reach the stage of achievement. As a result, positive effects can appear in the economic, health, psychological, and social domains, and it means living a life of successful aging.
Based on these results, the researcher intends to make the following policy recommendations. First, it is necessary to consider extending the participation period and excluding the screening process when re-applying. Second, it is necessary to provide quality jobs. Third, it is necessary to reconsider the diversity of public relations methods. Fourth, it is necessary to widely publicize the public-type, talent-sharing, and market-type job business system. Fifth, it is necessary to create and operate a system related to the health and psychological care of participants. Sixth, lifelong education to improve job performance is requested. Seventh, it is necessary to propose and implement a job policy for the elderly aged 80 and above.
Finally, suggestions for follow-up thesis related to participation in the elderly job project for successful old age are as follows. First, if the scope of the research target is limited to poor women or the elderly in the late-old age, it is possible to present a customized model that can expect more specific effectiveness in the elderly job project. Second, It is important to suggest a proposal for participation in the elderly job project from the perspective of lifelong education, such as the ‘hope and effort for the self-development of the elderly’, which was confirmed during the course of this study.
