The experience of immigrant students participating in career education : Focusing on the multicultural characteristic public school원문보기
This study attempted to explore the meaningful process of change in career development through interaction with various environments, focusing on the experience of immigrant students participating in career education conducted at the multicultural public school for three years. This study, which began with the question of whether career education in schools, a public education system, can have a practical and significant effect on the career development of immigrant students, was impossible for researchers to guess or determine the direction of the research results. Therefore, the researcher made special efforts to secure objectivity and validity to exclude prejudices that may hinder deriving various variations and possibilities for the research results while having a limited research environment to rely solely on statements through in-depth interviews. There were a total of 130 conceptualizations of the original data obtained through the analysis of the in-depth interviews, which were categorized into subcategories and categories again through step-by-step coding. There were 63 subcategories through axial coding, and as a result of reclassifying them, 25 categories were derived. The 25 categories were schematized into a paradigm model and a context model. The conclusions of this study obtained as a result of analyzing the relevance between categories according to the paradigm model of this grounded theory are as follows. First, the biggest difficulty faced by immigrant students in adolescence was internal difficulties. This is the central phenomenon of grounded theory. Identity confusion is a characteristic of adolescents found during this period, and it is a natural phenomenon that most adolescents experience in the developmental stage, and participants also experience this identity confusion. However, all seven participants are in a special situation that they entered the country by other wills, not by their own intentions, and this situation is in danger of increasing internal difficulties because it is a fixed environment that is difficult to change with their will or efforts. On top of that, cognitive problems such as poor Korean language, unstable emotional experiences in new homes such as remarried families, lack of economic support at home, difficulties and loneliness in forming relationships with peers, and social prejudice. Second, among these, immigrant students in adolescence had various experiences in the process of participating in school career education. This was noticeably found in the Basic Development Competency Support Stage. For example, I experienced help and achievement in the cognitive sector, such as improving practical problem-solving skills through Korean language study and Hangul typing competitions in multicultural special classes. In particular, it was club activities that showed a high frequency among the participants' statements. The benefits of various club activities promoted as part of support for career development competency were consistently confirmed in the student's statements. Some of the students who experienced positive emotions through activities such as ‘SAMULNORI’clubs, theater clubs, and orchestra clubs later decided it as a tentative job. Third, in addition to the above experiences, it was confirmed that career development of immigrant students entering the country during adolescence was achieved through career education at the school. In the main topic, it has been mentioned that the career education of this school is designed as a basic competency (self-efficacy) support stage and a career development competency support stage. The purpose of this design served as a facilitating factor in achieving the intended performance. Career education was embodied as a program of various activities that could realize the original design purpose, and in this process, self-efficacy was improved, and furthermore, the decision to go to school and a tentative job was made. It is analyzed that this career development played an interventional role in solving the internal difficulties of immigrant students, which was suggested as a central phenomenon in this study. Fourth, however, it was found that various variables other than career education in schools also had a great influence on the career development of immigrant students. This is a new variable that could not be expected or guessed in the early stages of the study, and it was revealed in the process of in-depth interviews and analysis of participants by researchers. Therefore, these variables soon provided major categories for shaping and theorizing schematics in grounded theoretical research. Participants responded not only to activities provided by schools with educational intentions, but also to their own mechanisms and methods, which led to meaningful changes in their experience in participating in school career education. For example, it can be seen that they struggled to solve their internal difficulties through internal responses such as patience, trying to adapt to reality, thinking about the future, physical responses such as self-solving or acquiring Korean nationality, and relational responses such as interactions with teachers or using multicultural networks. Various variables acted on the career development capabilities of immigrant students, which was analyzed as an interaction strategy for the central phenomenon. Lastly, the participants added their wishes for school education activities, including career education. The most realistic wish was that the use of the mother tongue was required for parents who were still inexperienced in Korean. In the case of immigrant students, it is often difficult for their parents to learn Korean easily, compared to receiving intensive education on Korean or acquiring Korean relatively quickly due to the high frequency of Korean use. Therefore, it is necessary to be careful to produce or translate home correspondence or various materials into their native language. Next, he also hoped to avoid the use of multicultural names. The definition of multiculturalism is actually based on dichotomous logic. In order to pursue equal students and equal education, removing the boundary between multiculturalism and non-multiculturalism should act as a prerequisite. Subsequently, the participants hoped for active participation of students from multicultural families. It means that participants themselves are aware of the possibility that their will can bring about positive changes. The fact that the place where this study was conducted is a public school is of great significance in the career education study of immigrant students in adolescence. First, the fact that immigrant students become members of general public schools has an important meaning in automatically or naturally realizing their educational rights. Public education does not make it difficult to choose the educational environment through efforts, but is an institutional device that can guarantee educational opportunities to anyone or anywhere. Just as patients have the right to be treated, education also has a public character. A representative space where such public education is implemented is public schools. However, public schools are easy to access because they are open to anyone in Korea, while immigrant students are still facing high barriers to entry, making them a dual space. Therefore, it is meaningful that they have become part of public schools without having to stand at a crossroads of choice. Second, public schools are relatively difficult to operate autonomous curriculum compared to private schools. However, the school did not overlook the increasing number of multicultural students, including immigrant students, and the fact that most career education programs were operated through regular curriculum proves that formal or exhibitive events were avoided and long-term career education was operated. By operating this, despite the overall limitations of public schools, it was able to be reborn as a multicultural school. Systems and perceptions have a deep connection. It is impossible to change perception without improving the system, and similarly, it is impossible to change the system without changing perception. Institutions and perceptions induce changes in society through interactions and virtuous cycles between each other. Therefore, as suggested so far, changes in the system and perception of immigrant students should be in line with them regardless of the prior relationship. Multiculturalism is literally a variety of cultures. While acknowledging that we are all multicultural beyond the boundaries between multiculturalism and non-multiculturalism, I hope that small changes in schools will soon be a starting point for changing society as a whole.
