Carbon fiber-reinforced plastic(CFRP) is a composite material of carbon fiber and resin, attracting attention as an eco-friendly material due to its many advantages such as high strength and low specific gravity. However, since carbon fibers are laminated, delamination and uncut fibers occur during hole processing. In order to solve this problem, a drill with a special shape exclusively for carbon fiber reinforced plastics has been studied and used a lot. In this paper, we try to solve this problem through the step drill which was designed specifically The step drill is composed of a core part and a step part. The core part performs roughing to remove a large amount of material, and the step part performs finishing by removing delamination and uncut fibers. In order to optimize the step drill with these characteristics, performance analysis was conducted according to the step angle and core diameter, and machining performance was analyzed according to the spindle speed and feed rate. Finally, the machining performance was improved by increasing the rake angle, and the shape of the step drill that dose not generate delamination and uncut fibers was suggested. Due to the high strength of CFRP, tools are subjected to extreme wear during machining. These problems are solved by coating the tools using materials that are more resistant to wear. However, drilling for CFRP is difficult to manufacture with general materials due to their complex shape, so chemical vapor deposition(CVD) diamond coating is the most actively researched and used. In this study, the surface and thickness of the coating according to the concentration of CH4 and the deposition time during CVD diamond coating were observed with a scanning electron microscope, and the performance was analyzed accordingly. The performance of the diamond-coated drill was compared and analyzed in terms of wear amount, cutting force, and delamination values while observing the wear process by thickness and surface particle size. Through this study, the effects of CH4 and deposition time on coating thickness, adhesion, drill lifetime, and performance were presented. Finally, in many papers, studies on microdiamond coatings, nanodiamond coatings, and multilayer coatings have been actively conducted to improve the performance of CVD diamond coatings. Multi-layer coating is a coating method in which microdiamond layer and nanodiamond layer are sequentially deposited, and microdiamond is used as an adhesion layer to compensate the disadvantages of nanodiamond coating, which has excellent surface roughness but poor adhesion. In this study, the cause of the difference in tool life between nano-diamond coating and micro-diamond coating is analyzed. For this purpose, in order to have the same adhesive strength for both coatings, the effect of the adhesive strength on the tool life was minimized by using nanodiamond as the adhesion layer. Wear of both tools was observed while machining up to 6m. In particular, the composition of the coating according to wear was analyzed by Raman spectroscopy of the same position for each wear. As a result, the microdiamond coating was graphitized according to wear, and the intencity ratio of graphite was relatively increased, but no change was found in the nanodiamond coating according to wear. Therefore, it can be seen that the occurrence of graphitization is the cause of the difference in the lifetime of the two coatings. This study dealt with the overall research process on drill from the shape of the drill for drilling of CFRP to the coating process to increase the performance. This study is expected to be a good guide in developing drills for various difficult-to-machining materials in the future as well as drills for processing CFRP.
