The climate crisis is a social issue that threatens the sustainable coexistence of humans and nature, requiring active participation and citizenship. Education and learning are discussed around the world in the direction of developing citizenship, with the aim for the sustainability of society and common good between humans and nature. In adult education, social movement is a field where education and learning take place, and citizenship can be fostered through communication with members. Therefore, this study attempts to examine the education and learning patterns of climate action network activists as a starting point to discuss the citizenship necessary to solve the climate crisis from a social aspect.
The climate action network is a social movement to solve the climate crisis and consists of online and offline networks of individuals and groups based on different interests and identities. With the development of the internet and social media, network-based social movements strengthen horizontal communication, while limiting education and learning based on mutual understanding due to difficulties in forming a sense of collective bond. Moreover, previous studies dealing with the learning of social movements show that it is necessary to deal with the education and learning patterns of network-based social movements.
The following research questions were developed with this purpose. First, what are the characteristics of education and learning experienced by individuals and groups based in different regions and identities based on networks? Second, what sort of citizenship do members recognize and internalize in this process? To explore the research question, this study collected information from five climate action networks in Korea. Specifically, data were collected through in-depth interviews conducted with people participating as activists in each network. The results of the analysis are as follows.
First, activists experienced education and learning in the climate action network as a process of deliberation and consensus on different perspectives and directions. Education and learning play a role in strengthening the network, deliberation and communication with citizens. Activists form a consensus that the climate crisis is not just a matter of the environment through education and learning based communicative action. Second, activists recognized two things as necessary for an ecological crisis: ‘deliberative civic participation’ and ‘recovery of interrelationships’. On one hand, deliberative civic participation requires a public sphere as a place for citizens to discuss and reflect on climate crisis-related issues in daily life. On the other hand, activists understand that humans and nature are interdependent and connected to each other. This requires a need for citizenship that restores interrelationships. Activists appear to understand how daily life is linked to the climate crisis, causing them to reflect in this area.
The results of this study suggest that continuing education and learning is necessary to develop and practice ecological citizenship in the community. First, education and learning to develop citizenship suggest the need to discuss the purpose of civic participation based on deliberation and restoring interrelationships. Second, with communication based on mutual understanding, continued education and learning that can form a consensus on different perspectives and directions in everyday life is required. Based on the discussion of the research results, this study is expected to serve as a basis that can be referenced for education and learning in the development of ecological citizenship in lifelong education.
