Due to COVID-19, the scope of performances is expanding from offline to the online space. Because offline performances are a field of art in which performers and audiences interact in the same time and space, there is a high probability of contact between them during the performance, making them vulnerable to infection. As a result, most popular music performances have been canceled or postponed indefinitely, causing serious damage to the industry. As a new breakthrough for revitalizing the popular music industry, online performances are emerging as a new alternative. Online performance is a service that transmits performance videos through an online platform without direct contact between performers and audiences. Since online performances are digital contents that visualize works, it is possible to overcome the risk of disease and create high added value. In addition, it has a great artistic significance in that not only does it make the performance a database, but also expand the audience's experience beyond the time and space limits of the stage. Therefore, online performances are being actively attempted in various popular music genres. However, because online performances are introduced suddenly due to COVID-19, some issues are raised in practice. First, the stakeholders to be removed or added to the online/offline hybrid performing arts ecosystem are not yet clear, and the role and profit distribution within the value structure are also uncertain. Second, there is a pessimistic view that online performances are not sustainable because it is difficult to deliver a sense of presence and interaction. However, there is also a positive prospect that online performances fused with cutting-edge technology will become a new service model for the performance industry by stimulating audience immersion. Third, the marketing strategy on what the product attributes of online performances are and how to effectively provide them to the audience have not yet been pursued sufficiently. Accordingly, in this study, the following research questions were set and strategies for revitalizing the popular music ecosystem using online performances were sought.
RQ1: How is the performing art ecosystem fused with online and offline performances? RQ2: What is the relationship between online performance audience's immersion experience and behavioral intention? RQ3: What are the preferred attributes of online performance audiences and the characteristics of each consumer group?
In order to address the above research questions, this study conducted popular music ecosystem model fused with online and offline performances (Study 1), the flow experience of online performance consumers and online/offline watching intentions (Study 2), and the preferred products of online performance consumers (Study 3) sequentially. In Study 1, by using the service value network ecosystem model, the existing offline-based popular music ecosystem (As-Is) and the future popular music ecosystem (To-Be) in which online and offline are fused were derived. In order to verify this, in-depth interviews were conducted with five experts from the industry and academia in the popular music world. As a result of the analysis, new stakeholders for online performance services flowed into the planning, production, distribution, consumption, and service support stages, excluding creative sources. In the planning and production stage, high-tech companies and video shooting and editing companies were added to maximize the visual effect. In the distribution stage, as the online performance platform appeared as a new channel, it was expected that the role of the existing ticket sales agency would be reduced. In the consumption stage, the range of consumers, which was mainly composed of offline, was extended to online performances, and it was confirmed that there was a characteristic that online and offline consumers interacted with each other rather than being isolated. In addition, in the service support stage, it was expected that specialized companies for copyright protection and management would be added according to the characteristics of online performances, which are derivative works. In summary, new value actors necessary for online performances have been introduced into all stages of the performance industry, and the roles of existing stakeholders are expected to change accordingly. The purpose of Study 2 is to examine the immersion experience of online performance audiences and to check how it affects their intention to watch online and offline performances. To this end, a research model was designed by combining self-determination and flow theory, and empirical analysis was conducted targeting 1,000 people who had experience watching online performances. In addition, it was analyzed whether there was a difference in the watching experience depending on the user belonging to a fandom. As a result of the analysis, autonomy and competence, which are self-determination variables, had a positive (+) effect on the flow experience, but the relationship was rejected because it had a negative (-) effect. In other words, watching a performance by voluntary choice regardless of the external environment and feeling one's competence in the performance process has a positive effect on performance immersion. However, it was found that strategies such as chatting, screen sharing, voting rights, and light sticks, which were introduced to promote the sense of presence and social connection of online performances, actually lowered the immersion of the audience. In addition, It was found that the audience's experience of multi-dimensional flow of pleasure, attention, time distortion, and positive emotion had a positive (+) effect on the intention to watch online and offline performances. Besides, the intention to watch the online performance had a positive (+) effect on the intention to watch the offline performance. As a result, it was confirmed that the online performance immersion experience leads to re-watching the performance. Furthermore, as a result of analyzing whether there is a difference in the watching experience depending on a fandom membership, there was a difference in the immersion experience and behavioral intention of fans and the general public. Audiences belonging to the fandom experienced a higher level of flow as the stimulus that promotes the relationship was satisfied. In addition, both the intention to watch online performances and the intention to watch offline performances were found to be expressed. On the other hand, in the case of groups not belonging to the fandom, the effect of relationship on flow was rejected, and the effect of positive emotions on intention to watch offline performances was also rejected. Therefore, in the case of an artist with a small fandom, it was confirmed that rather than trying to form an excessive relationship with the audience, they should focus on good-quality music, video, and performance composition centered on famous songs. In Study 3, an optimal online performance product was developed and the characteristics of each consumer group were analyzed. To this end, online performance product attributes and attribute levels are defined by genre (dance, ballad, trot), platform (video streaming platform, agency exclusive platform, online concert exclusive platform), crowd (without audiences, with audiences), merchandise (online merchandise, offline merchandise) and then 324 people who had experience watching online performances were surveyed. As a result of the analysis, it was found that in general, consumers prefer to watch ballad performances on video streaming platforms without audiences, and prefer packages that include online goods. By dividing consumers into three market segments and looking at the preferences of each group in detail, the first group of consumers aged in their 40s and 60s, mainly office workers and self-employed people, preferred to watch trot performances on an online concert platform without audiences, and buy offline goods. Group 2, a middle-income group in their 20s and 40s composed mainly of office workers, watched ballad performances on video streaming platforms without audiences and preferred online goods. Lastly, it was found that young people in their 10s and 30s, composed mainly of students and office workers, preferred to watch dance performances through video streaming platforms and prefer online goods. This study has the following implications. In Study 1, through the analysis of the online and offline hybrid performing art ecosystem, the structure of the value stream of stakeholders to be newly incorporated with was verified and industry strategies were proposed. In Study 2, the specific consumer viewing experience was studied by combining self-determination and flow theory and confirming how the intrinsic motivation of online audiences affects their intention to watch online and offline performances. They also suggested strategies to be used for online performances depending on whether they belong to a fandom. In Study 3, an efficient marketing strategy was proposed by analyzing the important attributes that affect the audience when choosing an online performance, developing an optimal product, and analyzing the characteristics of each consumer group. This study, assuming that online and offline performances will co-evolve with each other, studied strategies to revitalize the popular music ecosystem using online performances from various perspectives. As a result, the possibility of revitalizing the popular music industry using online performances was confirmed. Korea has the potential to lead the global high-tech convergence performance because it has an ICT infrastructure and professional manpower. However, since online performances are still a new service, there are many issues to be resolved. It is expected that the results of this study will provide a strategy for revitalization and sustainable growth of online and offline performances in the popular music industry.
