The purpose of this study is to derive the intermediary acceptance principle and literary meaning of bildgedicht, a form of contemporary poetry using paintings as the subject matter. Poetry and painting have closely influenced each other on the development of art genres in both East and West, from ancient times to the present. The intertwined influence can also be found in Korean poetry and painting, from pictorial poetry in the past to the modern bildgedicht. This study tried to clarify the significance of bildgedicht under the premise that they have an intermediary effect and literary value. Poems using paintings by Kim Jeong-hee, Lee Jung-seob, and Park Soo-Keun were selected as the subjects, as they have been covered as a subject matter in Korean poetry. The concept of bildgedicht was defined as an approach for a) analyzing the acceptance of painting in contemporary poetry and b) deriving the intermediary acceptance principle. And the aspects of Korean contemporary poems’ acceptance of paintings were examined. Based on Gisbert Kranz’s definition of bildgedicht, it was revealed that five types of poetry also occurred in Korea and that when paintings were accepted in contemporary poetry, they appeared in three types, based on their direct/indirectness and degree of activeness. Bildgedicht, which transfers the visual art of painting into poetry, is the poet’s appreciation of paintings through implicit and explicit language. This process is called intuition, an activity in which the emotions completely depend on the impression given by the object, and is the result of aesthetic function. Nicolai Hartmann explained aesthetic function with levels through intuition. The foreground is a primary level of intuition that focuses only on the visual elements of a painting, and the background is a secondary level of intuition that interprets deeply through the artist’s spiritual world, beyond the surface. Reground or chu-gyeong, is a term created by the author, meaning a tertiary level of intuition that refers to the level leading to spiritual self-creation through the pursuit of values held by the observer. Based on this, this study first examined Kim Jeong-hee’s Sehando. Sehando was created in the late Joseon Dynasty, and even the latest bildgedicht based on Sehando could not escape from the culture of the Joseon Dynasty. For this reason, there was a limit to the interpretation of Sehando when accepting the foreground and the background. Even though each individual uniquely expressed the sentiment they felt, the stereotypical symbolism tied to the era and the status of being an exile was still there. The interpretation using epistolary style was utilized to maximize the advantage of poetry that paintings did not have. When reground was the essence of interpretation, the personal situation and social phenomenon were reflected, using the painting as a motif. Rather than re-enact the previously acquired horizon of expectation of Sehando, this study expanded its scope to personal and social re-scenery, thereby acquiring a new meaning through bildgedicht derived from painting. On the other hand, bildgedicht using Lee Jung-seob’s painting is a reflection of the literary world on the fact that Lee Jung-seob’s work was mythicized more than necessary as his life was published as a biography in the literary world before his works were illuminated as art in the art critic world. It is an attempt at art criticism through painting. Poets generally created bildgedicht using Lee Jung-seob’s painting of bulls and boys. Art critics evaluated that as a subject matter, bulls represented the pure absolute spirit of the Joseon community during the Japanese colonial period and boys expressed the innocence that was not tamed by civilization. Each of them symbolizes innocence, purity, and national spirit as a member of an agricultural society in the literary world. The depiction of bildgedicht using Lee Jung-seob’s bull and boys painting as a subject matter was beautiful and elegant with regards to the foreground, background, and reground. However, the lack of new interpretations and meanings in the process of transitioning to poetry through language, other than those about the painting by art critics, was underwhelming. Lastly, bildgedicht using Park Soo-keun’s painting as a subject matter shared a distinctive writing style and the common theme of deficiency after the Korean war, but each poet showed various perspectives. The poems’ emphasis on the foreground gives movement to a still painting by talking about the historical backdrop, which made it easier than the painting to perceive the unique meaning of the art. In the case of the poems that focused on the background, art critical inference about the world of Park Soo-keun, who created unique granite-like textures and simple shapes without depth, was expressed with poetic imagination. Bildgedicht’s emphasis on the reground expanded the message of the painting by using language to signify that although lifestyles have changed over the years, women are still domestically and socially mistreated, as portrayed in Park Soo-keun’s painting. Although each bildgedicht holds literary beauty in that it elegantly transfers the poet’s reception of a painting into language, if preexisting horizons of expectations held by art critics are accepted as is, it is difficult to find the significance of creation because they lack new interpretations and meaning, and this is more prominent in bildgedicht that focus on the foreground and background. Bildgedicht that centers on the reground develops the imagery by transforming and expanding the existing horizon of expectation, thereby letting the poet extend the meaning and interpretation of the painting beyond simply replacing the visual image with language. Bildgedicht revealed that the intermediality of poetry and painting is not a simple exchange or interchange of materials. Rather, it is a process of sharing and complementing each medium’s characteristics which is not present when existing as a standalone art genre and stepping forward from existing art and seeking development. It is a good means for poetry, which uses language as its medium, to strengthen its position in this era where the dominance of art using visual mediums such as photography, video, tv shows, and film is growing stronger via digital media and internet platforms. It will lead to a climax of creativity that recreates poetry and painting through art convergence.
