Korean language education aims to increase communication ability and improve thinking ability, which starts with reading. However, the phenomenon of aliteracy is emerging in society as a whole, and in particular, the aliteracy phenomenon among adolescents and the deterioration of reading ability are becoming severe. The purpose of this study is to confirm the actual situation of adolescent aliterate readers and to categorize adolescent aliterate readers to reveal the characteristics of each type. In addition, it explores the causes of the formation of such readers and the process of deepening and fixation. For this purpose, adolescents' concept and characteristics were arranged as a theoretical background, the concept of aliteracy was defined, and the characteristics of the adult and adolescent aliterate readers were categorized. As a result of research question 1, first, the higher the school level, the higher the ratio of aliterate readers, and the worse the reading attitudes of adolescent aliterate readers. Adolescent aliterate readers read significantly less general reading materials and comic books(webtoons) and online information than readers, and a quarter of aliterate readers did not read comic books and online information at all. Second, adolescent aliterate readers perceived books negatively, and their emotional attitude toward reading was lower than that of ‘Normal’ for all items. In particular, the reader's identity appeared negative as the readers answered items lower than 'No'. Even the occasional reading was involuntary, and the reason behind not reading was because of the "lack of habit" and that it was "never enjoyable." Third, in the family literacy environment, book support, reading recommendations, and reading activity support were lower than youth readers. Finally, most of the school literacy environment was recognized as not good both in the past and present. The second question provided the following results. First, the adolescent aliterate readers were classified into three types based on the quantity of materials read: 'Plunge aliterate readers(P types),' 'Gentle Slope aliterate readers(GS types),' and 'Fixed aliterate readers(F types).' Second, P types perceived the image of the book as a sense of 'duty,' the GS types perceived the image of the book as 'boring,' and the F types perceived the book as 'difficult' and as something that 'has nothing to do with me.' In all three types, reading attitude was negative, and self-perception as a reader was also very negative. Among the three types, the F type had the worst reading attitudes and reader perceptions. Third, the P type had a very high level of support for family literacy when they were young, and GS types had book support in childhood but no support for reading activities. F types responded the lowest in all areas to the question about the support for past family literacy environment. The school literacy environment recognized that there were few past and present aliteracy readers of all three types. In the adolescent peer group, the image of reading was very negative. There were also difficulties in reading books due to excessive use of media such as smartphones, resulting in reduced concentration and comprehension problems. The results of study question 3 are as follows. First, the 'P type' grew up in a home environment with a high zeal for education, receiving active reading support until the early years of elementary education. During this period, readers lost interest in reading and felt burdened by excessive involuntary reading to obtain rewards and avoid punishment. As parents' focus shifted to learning reading from elementary and middle school, they lost autonomy in choosing books and reading activities and gradually became aliterate readers. Then, in middle and high school, they completely distanced themselves from reading, which had a little direct and immediate benefit until they became fixed aliterate readers. Second, 'GS type' read mainly interest-oriented readings, including educational cartoons in childhood, and gradually felt the fun of reading. However, in the later years of elementary school, when reading normally intensifies, their reading progress failed to transition to the higher level. They suffered difficulties in reading comprehension, which resulted in a loss of interest in reading. After that, they continued to fail in reading. They turned into a G type and became stuck without receiving a systematic reading education to improve it. Third, the 'F type' grew up in a home environment indifferent to reading and had little reading experience. They were aliterate readers even before schooling. Because of their lack of absolute reading amount, they did not develop their reading ability smoothly, and reading sluggishness worsened. By middle and high school, they remained to be aliterate readers who replaced reading by understanding through reading and watching videos of short summaries of texts. The following suggestions are formulated based on the implications of this study: First, adolescent aliterate readers are divided into P types, GS types, and F types according to the quantity of materials read, and each type has diffent characteristics. In the future, it is necessary to diversify and refine the creteria for classification of aliterate readers. Second, the reasons for aliteracy are diverse, and the caused of aliteracy differ depending on the type of aliterate readers. There were also differences in the process of forming and deepening aliterate readers. Since aliterate readers are not of the same group and have various formation and deepening factors, different types of support are needed to convert aliterate readers into readers. Third, in addition to the affective aspects such as the reading motives and attitudes of adolescent aliterate readers, the cognitive and social aspects also acted as a cause of aliteracy. In particular, the P type needed support to improve the readers’s autonomy, the GS type needed socail relationships, and the F type needed support to improve the reader’s cognitive ability. Thus, both internal and environmental support and guidance should be provided to transform adolescent aliterate reader into readers.
