The transmission of the airborne pathogen is classified into direct and indirect transmission. Droplet infection, a representative example of direct propagation, is caused by droplets, a particle with a diameter greater than 5 μm. The droplet falls within the range of about 1.5 m to 2.0 m from the source, but it can directly enter the respiratory tract of the adjacent person from the source so that it can also cause infection. Indirect transmission refers to transmission through an intermediate medium, but cases where droplets are propagated by aerodynamic movement without a medium are also classified as indirect transmission. COVID-19 has spread to many regions since its initial outbreak, causing a pandemic, and in the early stages of the epidemic, droplets from the source, human-to-human contact, and objects contaminated by the virus were known as the main route of infection. Recently, however, various studies have reported that inhaling viruses released in the form of aerosols in the air poses a risk of air infection, raising the risk of air transmission of COVID-19, and it is urgent to come up with countermeasures. The Wells-Riley model is a means of evaluating the infection risk of airborne transmission, which presupposes a uniform virus concentration at all points in the room. However, viruses may have different concentrations depending on their location, which may cause difference in the actual infection risk and calculated results. Therefore, the CFD program was used to compensate for these limitations. The CFD program allows you to visually check the trend of virus transmission over time and air, and extract individual virus concentrations depending on a specific location. Recently, various studies have been conducted to analyze the tendency of airborne transmission using the Wells-Riley model and CFD, but research comparing actual COVID-19 infection cases and simulation results are insufficient. In addition, although the natural ventilation rate and the infection risk are closely related, studies on the infection risk according to natural ventilation conditions are insufficient. Accordingly, in this study, the Wells-Riley model and CFD were used to determine the risk of airborne transmission according to natural ventilation, indoor airflow and ventilation conditions, and the results were compared with actual COVID-19 infection case. An on-site surveys was conducted on facility where actual COVID-19 infection was occurred, and information on the situation at the time of infection was collected. After modeling an arbitrary space to evaluate the influence of natural ventilation on the infection risk, 12 cases were divided according to the window area, arrangement, height difference, and difference of indoor and outdoor temperature. After that, volume flow rate of air due to the effect of wind only, temperature only, and total volume flow rate were calculated according to the case, and the relationship between natural ventilation and infection risk was analyzed by using the Wells-Riley model. As a result, in most cases, the natural ventilation rate was proportional to the value of window area and indoor and outdoor temperature difference, and the infection risk of COVID-19 tended to decrease as the natural ventilation rate increased in inverse proportion to the natural ventilation rate. The CFD simulation was divided into 5 cases according to the opening and closing conditions of the entrance and the operating conditions of the ceiling fan. The virus concentration extracted in real time and Wells-Riley model were applied to CFD simulation to check the concentration and risk distribution of the virus, and compared with actual infection case. As a result, the infection risk in areas close to the source of the virus was high, and the distribution of infection risk in Case 1, modeled under the same conditions as the real infection case, was similar to the actual infection case. The infection risk was the lowest in Case 3, and the highest in Case 4, indicating that the infection risk decreased as the natural ventilation rate increased. In addition, the virus was distributed in a wider area as indoor airflow was mixed due to the ceiling fan, so the infection risk in Case 1 was higher than Case 5. In conclusion, as the natural ventilation rate increases, the infection risk decreases, and the closer the distance from the source of the virus, the higher the infection risk. In addition, when airflow mixing devices such as a ceiling fan is operated, there is a possibility that the source of infection will spread to a wider area, increasing the risk of indoor infection. Therefore, in order to reduce the infection risk of COVID-19, it is necessary to reduce the concentration of indoor viruses by diluting outside air and viruses or emission infection sources to the outside, and to assess the infection risk considering various influencing factors not only COVID-19.
