Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, most universities have no other option than to conduct non-face-to-face lectures to abide by the social distancing policy in the first semester of 2020.
Due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation that had continued in 2021, most schools are still operating education services focusing on non-face-to-face and distance learning. Moreover, even if COVID-19 will be over in the future, a COVID-19-like pandemic may spread again regardless of period. To make from a crisis to an opportunity, it is necessary to take advantage of the COVID-19 crisis to improve non-face-to-face classes.
The purpose of this study is to cast a light on the essence regarding what kind of learning experiences students had in non-face-to-face situations and what these non-face-to-face learning experiences mean to them through a qualitative case study of college students' learning experiences for non-face-to-face distance learning in the era of COVID-19.
For this purpose, the research questions were set as follows. First, what kind of learning experiences did college students have in non-face-to-face situations, caused by COVID-19? Second, what are the points to fix or improve for future non-face-to-face education?
The data were collected by conducting in-depth interviews with 6 college students who experienced non-face-to-face learning from August to October 2021.
The main research results are as follows.
First, non-face-to-face and distant classes provide convenience learning without spatio-temporal restrictions through the smooth use of digital devices and a safe computer network. In addition, the study participants could efficiently manage their daily life and learning hours as students could select the time to attend classes.
In terms of the quality of classes, there was a difference depending on the competency of the instructor. This difference leads to a differential burden of tasks, showing the limitations of non-face-to-face distance education.
In the non-face-to-face learning situation, self-regulated learning ability had a large effect on the academic achievement and class satisfaction of students.
Second, a new paradigm has emerged regarding the study method of college students because of the prolonged COVID-19 outbreak Students do “study with me” by taking a video of their studying and uploading through ZOOM, a contact-free video class platform, and YouTube, as well as an online study that they put themselves on a small screen like a study room. A novel learning method to communicate and study with friends is embodied all over the world.
The interaction between the instructor and the students affected the learning satisfaction and academic achievement of students.
Finally, people should pay attention to the following things for non-face-to-face education in universities. First, the academic administration should be further strengthened to improve the class quality and develop a myriad of programs to make university education intensive. Furthermore, the university should consider their distinct characteristics and establish an academic atmosphere and culture to allow students to devote themselves to learning. Especially, to make Korean universities armed with national competitiveness, the government should support universities to expand the study hours and opportunities for students and to create a non-face-to-face infrastructure for universities.
