This research analyzes effect of beauty related consumption propensity and selection criteria on consumer behavior in order to encourage positive consumer behavior and suggest improvements to serve as basic data for academic and practical purposes. For empirical research, total of 453 surveys were collected from hair salon consumers around Seoul and Gyeonggi-do province then SPSS 24.0 program was used to conduct frequency analysis, factor analysis, credibility analysis and multiple regression analysis. Research results are the following. First, for demographic characteristics, women, ages 21 to 30, bachelor’s degree enrolled/graduate, married, average monthly income of 1 million won to less than 2 million won and students were the most common responses. Second, for salon usage and preference, most had a regular hair salon of choice, preferred salon type was a none-franchise salon with more than 1 and less than 5 employees, frequency of visit was once every two to three months, mode of transportation was by car, main purpose of visit was for a haircut, preferred salon location was close to home, average monthly expenditure for hair salon was from 10,000 won to less than 30,000 won, most preferred perks were discount coupons, most desired potential service besides hair related services was massage, and the main source of information for selecting hair salons was from family, friends and colleagues. Third, factor analysis of consumption propensity, selection criteria and consumer behavior yielded three sub-factors of conspicuous consumption, comparative consumption and practical consumption for consumption propensity, four sub-factors of professionalism, price, exterior and relationship for selection criteria, and three sub-factors of positive promotion, trust and intention to revisit for consumer behavior. Fourth, analyzing the effect of consumption propensity on selection criteria indicated higher conspicuous consumption and practical consumption resulted in higher trust, while higher comparative consumption and practical consumption resulted in higher focus on price. Higher propensity for conspicuous and comparative consumption resulted in higher focus on external factors such as appearance. Also, higher practical consumption propensity resulted in higher emphasis on relationship while higher comparative consumption resulted in less focus on relationship. Fifth, analyzing the effect of consumption propensity on consumer behavior indicated higher conspicuous consumption and comparative consumption resulted in higher chance of positive promotion, and higher conspicuous and comparative consumption resulted in higher levels of trust. Higher practical consumption propensity resulted in lower trust but higher intention to revisit. Conclusions based on aforementioned outcomes are the following. First, as consumers with higher conspicuous consumption and practical consumption propensities were more open to purchasing additional services, hair salons should utilize online advertising channels such as YouTube to suggest current hair trends and use such content to encourage additional hair services in order to maximize marketing influence on existing consumers. Also, since consumers with practical consumption propensity tend to be loyal while those with comparative consumption propensity are at risk of selecting better options elsewhere, hair salons should focus their efforts on existing consumers who have demonstrated long-term loyalty via regular visits and provide them with special discounts or points system based on visitation history. Second, since consumers with conspicuous consumption and comparative consumption propensities tend to feel positive about consumption and are willing to engage in positive promotional behaviors, hair salons could suggest trendy new styles and encourage sharing photographs on social platforms such as Instagram for conspicuous consumers and utilize Naver or Kakao Hair Shop services to showcase hair designers’ pedigrees and the salon’s competitive prices to allow consumers with comparative consumption propensity to make informed choices and feel satisfied with the quality of service they received. Also, although consumers with practical consumption propensity are less likely to purchase additional services, they tend to have higher intention to revisit. Therefore hair salons should encourage them to revisit by providing accumulative points-based system favoring returning consumers. Suggestions for future research are the following. First, since research subjects for this study were mainly Korean consumers, there could be interesting and diverse outcomes if research subjects were foreigners visiting hair salons in Korea. Second, because survey questionnaires here were based on hair salons, it’s challenging to generalize the outcomes for the entire beauty industry. Future research on all beauty related fields such as skin care, nail care and make up could provide even more comprehensive insight. Third, consumption propensity, selection criteria and consumer behavior can be approached from various perspectives such as psychological, environmental and procedural aspects. Therefore, there is ample room for further research endeavors predicting internal motivations and external behaviors of consumers in order to create adaptable management strategies within our ever-changing and expanding world.
