This study aims to understand the effect of dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tale books on reading comprehension and class attitude of students with intellectual disabilities. The research questions to achieve the purpose of this study are as follows. First, how does dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tale books affect reading comprehension of students with intellectual disabilities? Second, how does dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tale books affect learning attitudes of students with intellectual disabilities? In order to resolve the research problem, dialogic reading interventions using picture fairy tale books were conducted for three intellectually disabled students attending A Elementary School located in Gwangju Metropolitan City. Students in the study can usually understand the teacher's verbal instructions and express their opinions with simple words. However, when the questions related to the contents of the book were asked to the students after reading books, they could not answer confidently, answer irrelevantly, or avoid to answer. Also, when they were not interested in books, they were hardly focused on the books. To resolve this problem, an intervention program using a picture fairy tale book was constructed, and the intervention was provided using the design of a medium-to-many intermittent baseline between subjects among single target studies. After collecting each baseline data for the students to be studied, dialogic reading interventions were conducted four times a week for four weeks, and maintenance tests were conducted after a two-week break. The evaluation was focused in two aspects: reading comprehension and class attitude. Reading comprehension and class attitude evaluation were conducted after each session, and reading comprehension evaluation was analyzed by dividing into factual and inferential comprehension areas. The research results through dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tale books are as follows. First, dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tale books was effective in improving reading comprehension (factual understanding and inferential understanding) of students with intellectual disabilities. Students A, B, and C all improved their reading comprehension scores after intervention compared to the baseline, and the PND was 100%. It proves that dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tale books is effective in improving reading comprehension of students with intellectual disabilities. Second, dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tale books was effective in improving the learning attitude (cognitive, behavioral, intentional, and emotional areas) of students with intellectual disabilities. The PND of student A and student C were 100%, and the PND of Student B was 88%. It shows that dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tale books is an effective way to positively change students' attitudes toward reading books. In summary, dialogic reading intervention using picture fairy tales is an effective way to positively change attitudes toward classes by not only improving students with intellectual disabilities' reading comprehension but also enhancing students' interest and confidence. However, there is a difficulty with this study to generalize the research results, because this study aims only for students with mild intellectual disabilities. In future studies, it is necessary to conduct research on students with various degrees of disability. In addition, in order to overcome the limitations of a single target study, it is necessary to select disabled students as a group to verify the intervention effect, and to attempt more in-depth and multilateral research through continuous and linked reading education.
