The purpose of this study is to design question-based Havruta activities for mothers using picture books and to verify whether these activities generate positive changes in parenting efficacy, parenting stress, and discipline style of mothers. The research question set according to the research purposes is as follows:
1. What is the effect of the question-based Havruta activities using picture books on parenting efficacy, parenting stress, and discipline style of mothers with 2~5 years old children?
The participants of this study were 29 mothers with 2~5 years old children residing in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Jeju-do. The study used SPSS 26.0 for statistical analysis of the data, and verified the reliability by calculating Cronbach’s α coefficient of each research tool. The study also conducted an independent sample t-test using post-parenting efficacy, parenting stress, and discipline style test scores of the experimental and the control group and performed covariance analysis after controlling the effect of the covariate pre-test. The results of this study are as follows:
First, as a result of examining the changes in sub-factors of parenting efficacy of mothers between the control group and the experimental group before and after carrying out question-based Havruta activities using picture books, the post-test scores on general parenting ability, learning guidance ability, and discipline ability among parenting efficacy of the experimental group were statistically higher than those of the pre-test. There was no significant difference between the pre-post test scores on communication ability and discipline ability of the experimental group. Second, as a result of examining the changes in sub-factors of parenting stress of mothers between the control group and the experimental group before and after carrying out question-based Havruta activities using picture books, the post-test scores on pressure and stress for parent role among parenting stress were statistically lower than those of the pre-test. There was no significant difference between the pre-post test scores on the daily stress of the experimental group.
Third, as a result of examining the changes in sub-factors of discipline style of mothers between the control group and the experimental group before and after carrying out question-based Havruta activities using picture books, there was no significant difference between the pre-post test scores on coercive punishment, logical explanation, and neglect among discipline styles of the mothers of the experimental group. On the other hand, the post-test score in the coercive punishment of the mothers of the control group was statistically lower than that of the pre-test.
Through this study, it was confirmed that question-based Havruta activities using picture books had positive effects on general parenting ability, learning guidance ability, and discipline ability among the sub-factors of parenting efficacy of mothers, and on pressure and distress for parent role among the sub-factors of parenting stress of mothers. In other words, conversation and discussion methods of question-based Havruta activities using picture books had positive effects on general parenting ability, learning guidance ability, and discipline ability of mothers, and showed significant effects on lowering pressure and distress for parent role among parenting stress of mothers. In addition, although there was no significant difference between the pre-post test on discipline style of mothers, the post-test score on coercive punishment was statistically lower than that of the pre-test of the control group. This result predicts that although the control group did not directly participate in question and conversation activities of Havruta, positive changes still occurred by recognizing their own instructing and commanding language from weekly announcements in school newsletters.
This study contributes to increasing the accessibility to Havruta education using picture books that mothers could practically use and verifying the usefulness of Havruta parental education in a situation where there are not many parental education programs using Havruta. It is expected that this study can provide fundamental data for research on parental educational programs using Havruta.
