This study tried to verify the mediating effect of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness on the relationship between self-discrepancy and social anxiety among college students. To this end, a study was conducted on 206 male and female college students, and the measurement tools were the social interaction anxiety scale, the self-discrepancy scale, and the ambivalence over emotional expressiveness scale for the Korean version. For the analysis of the collected data, descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and correlation analysis were performed using the SPSS 21 program, and the mediating effect was verified through the mediation analysis method proposed by Baron & Kenny (1986). The results of this study are as follows. First, self-discrepancy and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness of college students were found to have a significant positive effect on social anxiety. Second, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness was found to have a partial mediating effect between self-discrepancy and social anxiety. In addition, both self-defense ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and relational involvement ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, which are sub-factors of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, were found to have a partial mediating effect between self-discrepancy and social anxiety. This means that although self-discrepancy directly affects social anxiety, it indirectly affects social anxiety when ambivalence over emotional expressiveness is mediated. Based on these results, the significance of this study is as follows. First, it is meaningful in that it provided basic data to support the relationship between self-discrepancy, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and social anxiety through the path of self-discrepancy leading to social anxiety. Second, it is meaningful to provide data supporting the need for an approach to emotional factors in the relationship between self-discrepancy and social anxiety by examining the mediating effect of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness in the relationship between self-discordance and social anxiety. Third, it is significant in revealing that cognitive and emotional factors should be approached together when dealing with social anxiety in the counseling process. Finally, based on the above research results, limitations of this study and suggestions for follow-up studies are presented.
