This study aimed to develop a humor-logotherapy (HL) program for enhancing the meaning of life and reducing stress and depressive symptoms in college students. The HL program was newly developed using Frankl's Logotherapy as a basis and the function of humor as a major component. Based on the development process of counseling and psychological education programs, the HL program was developed in the following order: 1) goal setting, 2) program composition, 3) preliminary research, 4) program implementation and effect evaluation. The stages were developed with the following methods. First, to establish the goal, the needs were identified through literature review and interviews with mental health experts and college students. Humor was added to the Fabry’s five guide posts to derive the main elements of the program, and the program goals and goals for each session were established. Second, the duration and number of sessions and the group size were determined by deriving the contents and activities for each session according to the goal, establishing a strategy, and reflecting on the interview results. A guidebook for therapists, a workbook for participants, and educational materials were written as a development draft. Third, the content validity of the draft program was evaluated by four mental health experts, and the revised program was applied to three college students and interviewed to finalize the program. Fourth, the experimental study with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was conducted to evaluate the effects of the HL program. The hypothesis of the experiment was as follows.
Hypothesis 1. The experimental group that participated in HL would exhibit a higher score for the meaning of life than the control group after the intervention. Hypothesis 2. The experimental group that participated in HL would exhibit a lower score for perceived stress than the control group after the intervention. Hypothesis 3. The experimental group that participated in HL would exhibit a lower score for depression than the control group after the intervention.
Meaning of life, stress, and depression were measured before and after the HL program and 4 weeks later. This study included 40 college students attending 4-year universities in Gwangju and Jeollanam-do. The experimental group went through the HL program once a week for 6 weeks. The collected data were analyzed using Repeated Measures of ANOVA using the SPSS 23.0 program.
The HL program developed in this study was as follows: The program consisted of six sessions. The topics for each session were as follows: 1) encounter with members, 2) who am I? 3) looking back on your own lives, 4) recognizing freedom of choice and responsibility, 5) discovering the purpose and meaning of life, and 6) confirming the found meaning of life and committing to living a meaningful life. Each session ran for 90 minutes. The activities and time for each stage were as follows. In the introductory phase, there were humorous 10-minute activities to build intimacy and distance the participants from serious self-problems. The education of HL program and meaning discovery activities were conducted for 60 minutes in the development phase. By sharing their impressions for 20 minutes at the end of the program, they were encouraged to express their feelings in the meaning discovery activities. The results of the experiment showed significant differences between the experimental and the control group in the meaning of life (F=6.52, p=.002), stress (F=3.71, p=.029), and depression (F=3.26, p=.044). A correspondence comparison test to confirm the continuity of the effect showed that the effect of enhancing the meaning of life and reducing stress in the experimental group continued until 4 weeks after the end of the program, but the effect of reducing depression did not persist. Based on the study results, it was confirmed that the HL program was an effective program that can help college students increase the meaning of life and reduce stress and depression. Considering the duration of the depression-reducing effect, in future studies, there should be a booster session within four weeks of end of the program. To specifically evaluate the effect of humor in HL, a randomized controlled test using traditional logotherapy as a control group is required.
