This study selected 85 papers on music psychotherapy from 2000 to 2021 analyze domestic and foreign music psychotherapy research. A total of 27 papers were selected for domestic papers, including the Korean Journal of Music Therapy, Korean Journal of Music Therapy Education, Journal of music and human behavior, Journal of Arts Psychotherapy and doctoral theses. For foreign papers, 58 articles were selected from the Journal of Music Therapy, Canadian Journal of Music Therapy, Nordic Journal of Music Therapy, British Journal of Music Therapy, Australia Journal of Music Therapy, New Zealand Journal of Music Therapy, Music therapy perspective and a total of 85 articles were selected. The selected papers were presented after comparative analysis by dividing them into the characteristics of the research subject, the characteristics of the research intervention, and the characteristics of the research content. Analysis contents are as follows. First, As for the diagnostic criteria for the characteristics of the study subjects, the majority of studies conducted on non-disabled, general problems, and general medical patients both domestically and abroad. Overseas, there were many types of mixtures of people with different diagnostic criteria, such as disabled and non-disabled, as a group. In addition, the age of the study subjects was more studied by adolescents, adults, and the elderly than infants and children in both domestic and foreign studies, and adolescents were the most common in domestic studies, and adults were the most common in overseas studies. The gender of the study subjects was random in the form of a group of clients with the same symptoms regardless of gender, both domestically and abroad. Also there were more studies on women at home and abroad than studies on men, women-only studies were conducted more frequently for reasons such as the primary caregiver's stress, and gender differences according to emotional responses to music and cognitive music processing (Eri. H, 2004; Dasomang Kim and Gyeongseon Kang, 2015; Na-kyung Lee, 2011). Second, among the characteristics of research interventions, in the mediation technique, the mixed technique was the most used in domestic studies, and the music appreciation was the most in foreign countries, followed by the song making technique in both domestic and foreign countries. Third, in terms of the characteristics of the research contents, there were many studies in which the number of sessions was less than 20 in both domestic and foreign countries, with 11 to 15 domestic studies and 1 to 5 foreign studies. In the case of Korea, the treatment goal was set in the emotional area, so it was conducted in mid- to long-term sessions, and in the case of foreign countries, many studies on emotional relaxation through music appreciation were conducted in short-term sessions. Looking at the session time, 41 to 60 minutes were the most common in Korea, and in the case of foreign countries, there were many studies in which a specific time was not presented because the session time was different for each client and group. On the other hand, in Korea, session hours of the same time were provided to each client in the study. As for the type of participation, the group was the most common both at home and abroad. In Korea, psychological measurement tools were used the most, and there were no studies using body (physiology), society, and music measurement tools. In foreign countries, as in Korea, the target area was the most emotional area, but it was measured by observation and record, and body (physiology) measurement was the most, and there were no studies using language and music measurement tools. Overseas characteristics include an interview with a client with experience in music psychotherapy, observation and analysis of the client's behavior and language, and measurement of the autonomic nervous system such as oxygen saturation, heart rate analysis, and cortisol measurement. This study looked at the research progress by dividing domestic and foreign music psychotherapy studies into the characteristics of the research subject, the characteristics of the research intervention, and the characteristics of the research content. Through this, the overall trend of music psychotherapy at home and abroad was analyzed. In comparison, this study is significant in that it presented basic data that can effectively use music psychotherapy in subsequent studies.
