This study focused on the effect of internalized shame, self-concealment, and depression on alcoholism among negative characteristics that can affect treatment programs in correctional facilities. Among male inmates currently in correctional facilities, a questionnaire study examined the differences in psychological characteristics of drunk criminals according to crime-related variables(total number, alcohol number, and sentence), and examined the correlation between psychological characteristics and alcoholism. Finally, multiple regression analysis was conducted to find out the effect of internalized shame, self-concealment, and depression on alcoholism. As a result of this study, it was found that depression and self-concealment had an effect on alcoholism, and internalized shame did not show any significant results, but internalized shame is likely to affect depression and self-concealment rather than directly affect alcoholism. In addition, among the sub-factors of internalized shame, self-punishment was found to have a negative effect on alcoholism, and this can be seen as a result of distinguishing between the general public with alcoholism and drunken criminals. In other words, it was confirmed that drunk criminals did not look back on their mistakes and led to crimes due to a lack of attitude to punish themselves. Through the results of the study, this study can propose a therapeutic approach that can help with the need for therapeutic intervention considering depression, self-concealing characteristics, and low self-punishment factors in alcohol treatment programs in correctional facilities.
