The purpose of this study is to identify the recidivism factors of drunken offenders and to help them with effective therapeutic intervention. The study sought to identify the factors related to drinking that affect recidivism, especially those that best distinguish between the recidivists and the non-recidivists groups. For this study, 334 people in prison studied the factors related to drinking that affect recidivism of 119 recidivists more than two years after their release. The alcohol-related measures used in this study were Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test–Korea(AUDIT-K), Problem Drinking Screening Test(PDST), The Korean version of Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale(SOCRATES-K), Subjective Well-being Scale, Alcohol Abstinence Self-Efficacy Scale(AASE). The collected data were analysed, with differences validation and logistic regression of drinking-related factors that the recidivists and the non-recidivists groups. The study found that alcohol dependence, harmful alcohol use, dependent drinking, cognitive factors, physical and other concerns, craving and withdrawal conditions were found to vary depending on the recidivism status of drunken offenders. Logistic regression has shown that the higher the harmful alcohol use, the higher the problem drink, and the lower the alcohol self-efficacy, the more the craving and withdrawal situation, the greater the recidivism. It was also found that AUDIT-K totals had a significant impact on recidivism, with a 1.97 - fold increase in the probability of recidivism when the AUDIT-K totals were increased by 1. In this study, we reaffirmed the need for a treatment program in correctional facilities conducted on drunken offenders and presented the recidivism risk factors that should be addressed in the program to reduce the influence of recidivists. This study was intended to present basic and empirical data for developing effective therapeutic interventions for offenders who commit crimes under drunken conditions.
