As the educational gap has become more serious throughout the world followed by the economic polarization, it leads to growing awareness of academic resilience which means capability of students who achieved more than expected, considering their socioeconomically disadvantaged family background. Using the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 Reading Data, this study aims to determine scale and percentage of academically resilient student group in S. Korea and analyze their personal characteristics compared to non-academically resilient students firstly. Second, it analyzes perception of Korean teachers on class-related variables so as to enhance understanding of characteristics in the teacher group who could influence the academic resilience. Third, it performs analysis on student-, teacher-, and school-level factors that affect chances of belonging to the academically resilient student on the whole. Based on the survey data from PISA 2018 sources which targeted 1,656 students aged 15 in the bottom quarter of PISA Index of Economic, Social and Cultural Status (ESCS), 1,288 Korean teachers, and 188 schools as well as evaluation data on students’ achievement in reading, this study performed descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and logistic multilevel model analysis. Consequently, it turned out the scale of academically resilient students in the reading section was approximately 6.4% in whole students first. Academically resilient students liked reading and perceived themselves as competent in reading, thinking that schoolwork is important for their future and showing high work mastery in comparison with non-academically resilient students. Plus, most of them appeared to have positive perception in teacher’s class except their feedback. Second, the Korean teachers answered they had conducted good classes and taught well enough when they’re asked the class-related variables which can affect academic resilience. However, they appeared to perceive somewhat insufficient personalized class and lack of feedback for students, which varied by personal background of teachers and characteristics of schools. Third, the analysis on factors that affect students’ academic resilience in the reading section showed that student-, teacher-, and school-level factors had both positive and negative impact. It reflects that teachers and schools are significant protection factors that affect students’ academic resilience, and it could contribute to enhancing students’ academic resilience, minimizing the influence of risk factor and maximizing protection factor’s. If the students enjoyed reading and perceived themselves as competent in reading even though they had socially, economically, and culturally disadvantaged family background, they believed the schoolwork is important for their future; and those with high work mastery showed high achievement in reading and overcame difficulties, increasing the chances of belonging to the academically resilient student group. In addition, if the students thought their teachers enjoyed and liked teaching and instruction enthusiastically from their points of view and also, provided personalized class for them, they were more likely to belong to the academically resilient student group. The students’ academic resilience in the reading section increased more especially with the teacher- and school-level factors as follows: when the teachers were female; when they thought the atmosphere in the classroom was better from their perspective; when the student behavior hindering learning was lower; and when the school provided extra Korean lessons beside normal classes. Fourth, the meaning in life the students perceived had negative impact on the academic resilience. And if the students did not discover the meaning in life to satisfy themselves or thought they had no specific meaning or clear goal in their life, they were more likely to belong to the academically resilient student group. Such findings confirmed multi-dimensional concept of the resilience and implied it’s necessary to pay attention to affective characteristics of the academically resilient students, beyond the perspective to confine the academic resilience to academic achievement only. Based on such findings, this study suggests to improve the student-, teacher-, and school-level factors that have positive impact on the students’ academic resilience and it’s necessary to provide policy support to improve risk factors that have negative impact. Furthermore, it’s required to conduct future study on emotional support for the academically resilient students.
