The purpose of this study was to support the professional growth of a childcare teacher on the practice of a play-based childcare curriculum. This collaborative action research focused on the pedagogical documentation. The two research questions were as follows:
Research Question 1. How was the process of collaborative action research applied to the topic of pedagogical documentation for the professional growth of the participating teacher? Research Question 2. What were the changes made by the participant teacher in terms of professional growth applied in the process of the collaborative action research on the topic of pedagogical documentation?
The participants in this study were a childcare teacher and 12 two-year-old toddlers in her care at a public childcare center. After two preliminary studies lasting eight and four weeks, the collaborative action research was applied from November 2021 to February 2022. For data collection, a Google Workspace online platform was established, and smart devices such as smartphones, tablet PCs, and laptops were used. In-depth interviews with the participating teacher were conducted, and the teacher’s pedagogical documentation, class documents, and photographs were collected as the primary data sources. The researcher wrote field notes and reflective journals to support the teacher and collect more data for the action research. This study’s results revealed that the collaborative action research processes were as follows: “goal setting and planning → implementing pedagogical documentation → reflecting and evaluating” and these processes were repeated to a third round. In that third round of the implementation of the action research, the researcher found that the contents and methods of pedagogical documentation used by the participating teacher reflected her professional growth and embodied her reflective practices. In the first implementation of the action research, the teacher was asked to observe and document the toddlers’ daily lives and play time with the goal of “seeing, thinking, and planning in detail.” In addition, the teacher reflected on, and documented, their daily routines and tried to respond sensitively to the education-related questions. To deepen her understanding and insights into toddlers’ play time and to reflect on her own teaching behavior, the pedagogical documentation in the second implementation was used with the goal of “reviewing children’s play and reflecting on own teaching behaviors.” In the third implementation of the action research, we used online platforms and smart devices with the goal of “making pedagogical documentation efficiently.” The participating teacher confessed that she experienced professional growth in terms of “changes in her teaching behaviors” and of “changes in her perspectives on child agency” while implementing the pedagogical documentation. The teacher had documented the children's play and learning, tried to understand the meanings inherent in the children’s language and behaviors, and, accordingly, she experienced changes in her teaching behaviors with respect to responding to, and appropriately supporting, the children’s sensitivity. By implementing the pedagogical documentation, the teacher gained practical knowledge through reflective thinking on her own teaching behaviors and interactions with the children. The process helped the teacher become an expert teacher. Moreover, the teacher experienced changes in her perspectives on the children’s agency. She could encourage the children acquire a higher level of perspective-taking based on her observations. She could also encourage the children to take the lead in their own play and explore and learn about the world around them on their own. Pedagogical documentation recorded the language, behaviors, and play of the toddlers in the forms of written materials, photos, and videos, and expressed the relationship between the moment that an event occurred and the situation. Meanwhile, the researcher found that the teacher's perspectives affected her practices of the pedagogical documentation, and that she had been influenced by the materialism of the pedagogical documentation. In conclusion, pedagogical documentation had positive effects on this participating teacher’s autonomy and her ability to support the children’s agency by encouraging them to expand their perspective-takings during free play. It is therefore recommended that teachers think, reflect, and actively form their practical knowledge by changing their teaching methods. Collaborative action research is effective in encouraging teachers to do self-research and reflection in collaboration with experts. Professional growth can be supported by the recognition and resolutions of problems that teachers cannot resolve by themselves. Furthermore, collaborative action research is convenient and useful for teachers because it reduces teachers’ workload on doing research. In this study, we made the process of conducting pedagogical documentation efficient by using online platforms and smart devices that can be accessed anytime and anywhere via various routes. This process played a key role in applying flexible and convenient practices. However, individual differences, such as a teacher’s ability to use technology, will yield different outcomes. Thus, the teachers might need to make greater efforts into experimenting with new methods and practices. In that way, teachers can use pedagogical documentation more efficiently to support their professional growth.
