Listening leads to speaking, reading, and writing areas in learning all languages, whether mother tongue or foreign language, so the composition of listening teaching and learning processes, teaching and learning methods, and selecting materials are important. Most of the learners who learn Korean as a foreign language are foreigners who want to know Korea more, so listening to Korean incorrectly can instill misunderstandings or distorted perceptions of Korean society.
Movies, dramas, and television entertainment programs can lead to interest in Korea because they reflect Korean society to some extent with certain entertainment topics, and are also convenient to access through the Internet and smartphones. In addition, they can help you learn expressions used in real communication because most of them develop into speech. And thanks to the popularity of K-POP since 2017, more and more foreigners are learning Korean through K-pop. The lyrics in the song have a literary aspect added, so it can be a great Korean listening material if taught in connection with poetry.
However, dramas, movies, entertainment programs, and pop music all contain some violent expressions, swear words, slang, neologisms, inscriptions, and unidentified foreign words, and it is easy to learn Korean at the elementary and intermediate levels with a certain interest, but due to these characteristics, there is a fundamental limit to teaching. Since the majority of foreigners studying in Korea are academic learners attending Korean universities, higher-quality listening materials for university-level academic activities are needed at the intermediate stage when the level of Korean language required increases.
News reports on issues surrounding Korean society, ranging from weather-like information, events and accidents to social, cultural, economic, political and international situations, providing Korean learners with a certain level of intermediate vocabulary and help them understand the current Korean society and social issues. News can lead to the correct use of Korean because the pronunciation is accurate, the delivery speed is constant, and the pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary are adjusted to the standard language norms. Therefore, this study proposes intermediate-level Korean listening teaching and learning using television news programs broadcast in Korean to improve the listening skills of foreign learners for academic purposes above college students.
In Chapter 2, a theoretical review was conducted on the media including news and Korean listening education using it. Intermediate-level Korean education was defined at level 3 and level 4 according to the criteria of the Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK), a Korean language test organized by the National Institute for International Education under the Ministry of Education of Korea.
In Chapter 3, this study analyzes comprehensive Korean textbooks for actual grade three and four learners. Based on this, weather forecasts were presented to third grade learners, and teaching and learning guidance plans containing accident news were presented to fourth-class learners.
Chapter 4 examines literature data such as news or newspaper articles showing new news consumption trends and statistics for the latest year to suggest the direction of Korean listening education using news, and analyzes the characteristics of news to examine the value in Korean listening teaching and learning activities. In addition, weather forecasts and accident news articles were selected to analyze related headlines and expressions.
In Chapter 5, this study suggests teaching and learning guidance for intermediate Korean listening using news programs. In the activities before listening, the messenger dialog was for encourage to form prior knowledge by presenting simple announcements about the situation of delivering and sharing the contents of news articles and news contents. In the activities during listening, only part of the news video was played to guess the content. Listen to only the news voice, showing the news video, O.X. quiz based on its content, and filling the blanks on the news article were also proposed. In the post-listening activity, a method of expanding the learning content was also suggested, such as setting a title based on what was heard, making news articles and news and in the form of role plays.
This study proposed teaching and learning guidance for Korean intermediate listening using television news programs. In this process, in order to set the content of the learning guide, previous studies on Korean intermediate listening teaching and learning activities using news and literature such as Korean intermediate textbooks were referenced, and changes in the media environment surrounding television news were reflected in the guide.
