The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of five senses play using food ingredients on the playability and social competence of infants aged 2 and a half. The research questions set up for this are as follows.
1. What is the effect of five senses play using food ingredients on the playability of infants aged 2 and a half? 2. What is the effect of five senses play using food ingredients on the social competence of infants aged 2 and a half?
The subjects of this study are 28 infants aged 2 and a half at C Daycare Center and S Daycare Center located in Gyeongju. 14 infants from daycare center C were assigned to the experimental group, and 14 infants from daycare center S were assigned to the comparative group. The experimental group conducted five senses play activities for food ingredients, and the comparative group conducted sensory search activities based on the standard childcare process. The tool used to measure infant playability in this study was based on the definition of Liberman (1965), and the infant playability scale CPS (Children's Playfulness Scale) produced by Barnett (1991) was adapted by Yoo Ae-yeol (1994) and modified and supplemented by Yoon Sang-in (2011) to apply to infants. The tool used to measure social competency was the social competency scale for infants aged 2-3 that was revised and supplemented by Jung Gye-sook (2010) to validate the Play Tools for Learning (PTL), a tool for evaluating social competency for infants aged 2 and 3. For data analysis, Mann-Whitney's U test and covariance analysis (ANCOVA) were conducted using the SPSS 26.0 statistical program.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, five senses using food ingredients showed significant effects on each of the children's playfulness sub-areas: physical spontaneity, social spontaneity, cognitive spontaneity, expression of pleasure, and sense of humor. This means that the five senses of food ingredients have a positive help in the development of infant playability. Second, five senses using food ingredients showed significant effects on each of the children's social competence sub-areas: play attempt and participation, shared understanding, emotional control, and interest in peers. This means that the five senses of food ingredients have a positive effect on the overall development of infants' social competence.
The results of this study suggest that five senses using food ingredients have a positive effect on the improvement of playability and social competence of infants aged 2 and a half, and are effective programs. Based on this study, recognizing the educational value and importance of five senses play activities in infant care sites and continuously developing and applying programs using various ingredients, it will have a positive effect on infant playability, social competence, and overall development.
