This research is on implementing a program that encourages two year olds to actively engage in Indoor Sand Play through providing information for setting up and performing the Indoor Sand Play, and seeking for improvements of the program through planning, practice and evaluation. Through this process, our goal is to provide a successful and effective program of Indoor Sand Play. The program was developed after trial and error through examining different elements of children’s play patterns, teacher’s professionalism, and modifying the environments. Related research questions are as follows.
Question 1. How is the course of action research for activating the Indoor Sand Play of 2 - Year Old ? Question 2. What were the effects of the action research on revitalizing the Indoor Sand Play with 2 - year olds? The research was conducted over about 4 months from September 2020 until December 2020 at “L” Child Care with 11 two year-old children. The data was gathered by active observation, taking videos and pictures, research journaling, and from gathering input from the on-site early childhood educators. The research process followed three key steps following a trial of the Indoor Sand Play: identify problems, solve the problem through practice, and testing the Indoor Sand play again with an updated approach. The results follow below.
First, the action research program to encourage two years old children to actively engage in Indoor Sand Play was developed through three steps. The Indoor Sand Play activity was introduced to solve the problem of limited accessibility for Outdoor Sand Play due to the Covid19 pandemic as well as fine dust particles in the air. However, it was identified that some children were not interested in Indoor Sand Play due to being uncomfortable with playing and touching sandy textures. The challenge of developing Indoor Sand Play was to get children interested in playing with sand. To overcome this challenge, the researcher redesigned the environment, engaged educators, fostered ongoing discussions between educators about their roles, introduced ongoing Indoor Sand Play to educators, and provided additional materials to support children to engage in active pretend play. However, there were difficulties to fostering play due to the limitations of these measures. Therefore, the Indoor Sand Play program was expanded by providing natural and everyday life materials, and thereby children began to engage in creative, interactive play with each other. Children who were not interested at first started to participate in Indoor Sand Play. During the active research there was a process of observation, self-reflection, and reiteration.
Secondly, with this action research for activation Indoor Sand Play for two years old there was identifiable changes in children’s play patterns, the professionalism of educators, and the physical environment. Children enjoyed the play and were proactively playing and expanding their play by interacting with their peers; and, children demonstrated longer play-oriented attention spans. In addition, the educators had shown increased interest in Indoor Sand Play and supporting children’s play by observation and evaluation. Lastly, we were able to provide an integrative play environment that was also safe and secure.
