The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of neck and shoulder stability exercises using a gym ball and a sling on the rounded shoulder posture, scapular position, forward head posture, and the range of motion of cervical vertebrae joints in female university students in their 20s suffering rounded shoulders and forward head posture. To this end, 60 female university students in their 20s attending K University located in Gwangju Metropolitan City were selected as the research subjects, and 50 excluding those who did not meet the criteria were finally selected and divided into the gym ball exercise group (25 research subjects) and the sling exercise group (25). The measurements and experiments were conducted for 30 minutes a day, twice a week for four weeks from early September to early October. As for the measurement tools, rounded shoulder posture, scapular position change, craniovertebral angle, craniorotational angle, and the range of motion of cervical vertebrae joints were measured to evaluate body alignment and range of motion. In addition, differences were measured and compared before, during, and after the intervention. The results of analyzing each measurement are as follows: Both rounded shoulder posture, scapular position, craniovertebral angle, and craniovertebral angle had statistically significant differences over time (p<.05), and a significant interaction was found according to time and between the groups in both rounded shoulder posture, right scapular position, and craniovertebral angle (p<.05). As a result of evaluating the effects between individuals, both rounded shoulder posture and both scapular position, and craniovertebral angle and craniorotational angle all showed significant differences between the groups (p<.05). As for the range of motion of cervical vertebrae joints, there was a statistically significant difference over time in changes in both lateral flexion, flexion, extension, right rotation, and left rotation (p<.05). In addition, only extension and left rotation showed significant interaction according to time and between the groups (p<.05). The evaluation of the effects between individuals revealed significant differences between the groups in the change of both lateral flexion and extension (p<.05). In conclusion, it was confirmed that neck and shoulder stability exercises, including gym ball exercises and sling exercises, had positive effects on female university students in their 20s with rounded shoulders and forward head posture. Accordingly, active treatment for typical neck and shoulder disorders, which can be more common after COVID-19, is expected to improve the quality of many patients’ lives.
