Autonomous driving, a method in which means of transportation such as automobiles, robots, aircraft, and ships judge and operate on their own without human manipulation, has been actively researched and developed due to the recent development of equipment and technology. Object recognition technology, a key technology of autonomous driving, is largely divided into obstacle detection and avoidance and road recognition. In general, various methods based on Canny Edge Detection and Hough Transform algorithms are used for road recognition. Since paved roads include lanes, curbs, and separators, relatively stable autonomous driving control is possible by applying distance sensing or image recognition. However, more delicate efforts are needed for autonomous driving on unpaved roads because boundaries of the roads are not clear and environmental conditions are variable. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a travel path estimation algorithm using a semantic segmentation model, one of the CNN(Convolutional Neural Networks)-based object recognition methods. Through the learning of the semantic segmentation model BiSeNetV2, an image of a unpaved road is divided into sky, non-movable area, and movable area, and the ROI(Region of Interest) determined as the road is set within the movable area frame to set the convex hull. A new road boundary line is created by connecting the concave points toward the road by examining the convexity defect with the location pixel information between the outline nodes obtained through (convex hull). Through our experiments, the high accuracy and computational speed of the semantic segmentation model were confirmed. As a result of inferring possible paths for various unpaved road images, the directions and distances of the moving paths were further optimized compared to the method used in the existing paved road. Therefore, stable autonomous driving can be expected in various unpaved road environments by using the proposed algorithm.
