The Effect of Parents’ Rearing Attitude on Job Readiness of People with Developmental Disabilities. : Focusing on the Mediated Effect of Self-esteem원문보기

For this study, parents who have the children with developmental disability belonging to special schools, community rehabilitation center, sheltered workshops for the people with disabilities in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Jeollabuk-do, Jeollanam-do and Chungcheongnam-do were surveyed for their child-rearing attitude. In addition the response results of their children’s job readiness and self-esteem scales were analyzed. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the issuses deal with this study are as follows. First, what are the rearing attitudes of parents who have the children with developmental disabilities? Second, how are child-rearing attitudes according to parental Demographic Variables? Third, what is the relationship between parents’ rearing attitude, job readiness and self-esteem of their children with developmental disabilities. Fourth, what is the effect of rearing attitudes on job readiness of the children with developmental disability through self-esteem? In order to this study, the online and printing questionnaire were both distributed to parents whose children’s main type of disability is intellectual disability or autism and whose child is between the age of 17 and 39 year old. The reference period was from October 1 to November 25, 2022, and 200 copies were distributed and a total of 145 copies were used, excluding responses that could not be used for the study. Finally, 145 questionnaires were analyzed according to the type of disability and the age of the disabled children which were designated by the researcher. The research results are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the rearing attitudes of parents who have the children with developmental disabilities, the highest mean was affectionate attitude(M=3.52), controlling attitude(M=3.31), autonomous attitude(M=3.26) and rejective attitude(M=3.00) in oder among the respondents’ parenting attitudes. It appeared that the parents who participated in this study responded that they treated their children with developmental disabilities with an affectionate rather than a rejective autonomous parenting attitude. also tended to raise their children with a controlling rather than an
Second, the result of analyzing differences in child-rearing attitudes according to parents’ Demographic Variables are as follows. According to the gender of the parents, the mother(M=3.60%) showed an affectionate attitude toward their children with developmental disability rather than the father(M=3.19). These differences were statistically significant. Rejective and autonomous parenting attitudes were showed statistically significant differences in parents’ rearing attitudes according to their ages. The age groups with the highest rejective attitude was in their 40s(M=3.16), 30s(M=3.04), 50s(M=3.02) and 60s(M=2.65) in order. This means that rejective parenting attitude was high in the 40s. On the other hand the age groups with the high autonomous parenting attitudes were in their 30s(M=3.41), 60s(M=3.40), 50s(M=3.28) and 40s(M=3.06) in that order. This responses show that parents in 60s have a higher level of autonomous parenting attitude than those in their 40s. There was a significant difference in rejective parenting attitude according to the parents’ educational background. The rejective attitude was appeared in the order of Bachelor degree(M=3.16), Associate degree(M=3.00), Master’s degree(M=2.95) and high school graduate or less(M=2.27), this shows that the rejective attitude of parents with Bachelor degree was higher than that of high school graduate parents. Affectionate and controlling child-reasing attitude were found to be significant according to parents’ monthly income. The affectionate parenting attitude is tend to be higher when the income is higher. Also regarding parenting attitude according to parent’s occupation, rejective attitude showed significance. When looking at the difference in parents' rearing attitude according to whether or not the parent has a job, there was a significant effect of parenting attitude. it found that the parents who don't have any occupation(M=3.09) showed a higher rejective parenting attitude than those with a job(M=2.77). In the case of the working parents, it can be assumed that the parents' rejective attitude could be increased because of the time to take care of children and the burden of the job.
Third, the correlation between parenting attitudes and the vocational readiness and self-esteem of children with developmental disabilities was analyzed. Among parenting attitudes, affectionate parenting attitudes indicated statistically significant positive correlation with all the subfactors of vocational readiness except for ‘cognitive skills’. Autonomous parenting attitudes showed statistically significant positive correlation with all the subfactors of vocational readiness. Rejecting attitudes indicated statistically significant negative correlation with everyday skills, cognitive skills, and social skills among the subfactors of vocational readiness. Controlling attitudes showed positive correlation with all the subfactors of vocational readiness except for ‘cognitive skills’. Generally, controlling attitudes can be seen as negative parenting attitudes, but due to the characteristics of developmental disorders, it is often required for parents to stress rules and control or disciple their child by restricting any deeds or attitudes that may harm others. Also, controlling attitudes can rather influence vocational readiness or adaptation desirably. This is why that kind of result has been derived. According to the results of analyzing correlation between parenting attitudes and self-esteem, among parenting attitudes, not rejecting attitudes but affectionate attitudes autonomous attitudes, and controlling attitudes showed positive correlation with self-esteem. Lastly, according to the results of analyzing correlation between self-esteem and vocational readiness, self-esteem indicated statistically significant positive correlation with all the subfactors of vocational readiness. In particular, self-esteem showed a great correlation of 0.7 or higher with cognitive skills, work ethics, social skills, and operational skills.
Fourth, the effects of parenting attitudes on the vocational readiness of children with developmental disabilities with the mediation of self-esteem were analyzed. According to the findings, self-esteem indicated complete mediation in the correlation between parenting attitudes and vocational readiness.
In conclusion, this study has verified the hypothesis that not controlling or rejecting attitudes induced by the disabilities of children but affectionate and autonomous attitudes can have positive effects on their vocational readiness. In addition, when parents treat their children with developmental disabilities with positive parenting attitudes, children will get to experience more stability and form greater self-esteem. If they are more self-esteemed, children with developmental disabilities will show a higher degree of vocational readiness by exploring themselves and jobs more, understanding their characteristics, and recognizing their abilities better.
The results of this study have the following significance. First, it is difficult to find studies targeting people with developmental disabilities to examine the effects of self-esteem in the correlation between parenting attitudes and vocational readiness. This study has verified the full mediating effect of self-esteem that positive parenting attitudes can increase the self-esteem of children with developmental disabilities and elevate vocational readiness through the mediation of self-esteem. Therefore, this study is significant in that it has revealed the importance of positive parenting attitudes for the vocational readiness of people with developmental disabilities and also of parental roles in their vocational readiness grounded on the improvement of self-esteem. Second, it has been found that while people with developmental disabilities are preparing for their occupation, it is important to increase self-esteem in the rearing environment, and the roles of parents are crucial in the process of their career development. Therefore, it can be said that there is a great need for parental education in the process that the people with developmental disabilities are preparing for their occupation. In particular, the opportunities of parental education to learn how to improve their child’s self-esteem need to be given by age groups. Particularly, parents with children having developmental disabilities tend to have interest in therapeutic information to get rid of their children’s disabilities. As self-esteem is often influenced by the primary caregiver from infancy, it is necessary to prepare various parental education programs for different age groups so that parents can be educated about the importance of improving positive parenting attitudes and self-esteem as the major factors associated with their child’s career path. In conclusion, this study has revealed the importance of parents’ roles and positive attitudes as major factors to heighten the vocational readiness of people with developmental disabilities and their social participation with their own job by developing their psychological resources such as self-esteem positively as they grow.
Lastly, this study presents its limitations and suggestions as follows. First, as this study targets parents in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Chungcheongnam-do, it is difficult to generalize the results. In future studies, samples need to be distributed evenly in different regions. Second, this study used the survey sheet on parenting attitudes administered by the parents themselves. Since parenting attitudes can change according to the child’s growth and parents’ maturity, the results may differ depending on at which point the participants recall and respond about their parenting attitudes. This aspect needs to be considered in follow-up studies. Third, this study examined parenting attitudes with one of the parents, but in rearing environment, both parents are responsible. In addition, follow-up studies are needed on all kinds of families rearing children with developmental disabilities including single-parent families and families with children raised by grandparents reflecting the trends of the time. Fourth, although there is correlation between parenting attitudes and vocational readiness and self-esteem, research has focused on non-disabled people so far. As that research is still insufficient, it is necessary to conduct follow-up studies multilaterally on parenting attitudes, vocational readiness, and self-esteem.
