While the Korean Sign Language Act was enacted in 2016, it has stimulated to improve the educational environment for Korean sign language. The Korean sign language education environment, however, has not been improved. For example, some unstructured curricula and unsystematic textbooks for the education of sign language are still used in field of sign language education. In addition, as each textbook contains vocabulary which is not carefully graded, classifying sign language words into levels of difficulty is one of the urgent tasks related to improving the sign language education environment. This study, therefore, examines the structure and contents of sign language textbooks produced and used by three sign language education centers approved by the National Institute of Korean Language, and extracts words from the six textbooks in order to grade them according to their levels of difficulty. The results of this study are as follows. First, each textbook reflects recent trends in sign language education. The textbooks help people to learn sign language vocabulary in various contexts through 'expression' rather than just listing it, including sign language grammar. In addition, although there are minor differences between the textbooks, video materials (using QR codes) and sign language images are provided for better learning experiences. Second, 1,750 vocabularies were listed from the six textbooks mentioned above and 912 final vocabularies among them were carefully selected by professional sign language educators, and then the words were graded through three levels. 486 words were classified into Level 1(beginner), 397 words into Level 2(intermediate), and 30 words into Level 3(advanced). Level 1 vocabulary includes words which are frequently used in basic daily life, level 2 vocabulary has simplex and compound words, and level 3 vocabulary includes idiomatic expressions that are less frequently used, difficult to understand, or should be understood in context.
For follow-up research, I would like to suggest what follows. First, more textbooks should be examined to provide valid vocabulary classification and analysis Second, as the classification of vocabulary grades shows that there are a small number of level 3(advanced) vocabulary compared to level 1(beginner) and level 2(intermediate), it is necessary to find and list vocabulary equivalent to level 3(advanced) but, since it is a huge task, it should be carried out at the national level. Third, research on the frequency of use of sign language vocabulary should also be conducted at the national level so that the frequency can be quantified. Fourth, it is better to use video materials as a way of presenting words when a survey analysis is conducted. Fifth, research on sign language image and Korean words equivalent for sign language which are presented differently for each textbook should be continued.
