The purpose of this study was to provide information on the characteristics of each take-off style by analyzing the biomechanical difference according to the take-off style during the spike motion, a basic attack technique in volleyball. The subjects were 12 healthy males(age: 23.4±1.7 yrs; height: 17807±5.7 cm; weight: 77.1±13.8 kg; career: 5.8±2.1 yrs.) in their 20-30s who were volleyball club members, had technique of spiking with right hand, and had no history of musculoskeletal injury or surgery within the past six months. They were asked to perform spike movement of both hop-step style jump(jumping after both feet touch the ground at the same time) and a closed-step style jump(jumping after both feet touch the ground with a slight difference in time). To examine the kinematic and kinetic differences according to the take-off style during the spike motion, 3D motion analysis was performed using eight infrared cameras(sampling rate: 100 Hz), an eight-channel wireless electromyography(sampling rate: 1,000 Hz), and two force plates(sampling rate: 1,000 Hz). The collected data were analyzed using paired t-test, and the statistical significance level was set at α=.05. The results are as follows.
First, the time taken in the run-up section was longer in the hop-step style jump than in the closed-step style jump, and the time required in the take-off section was vice versa.
Second, a significant increase in the displacement of the center of mass was observed in vertical and horizontal directions in the run-up section for hop-step style jump and in horizontal direction in the take-off section for closed-step style jump.
Third, a significant increase in the movement speed of the center of mass was observed in vertical directions in the run-up section for hop-step style jump and in horizontal direction in all sections for closed-step style jump.
Fourth, the angles of lower extremity joints showed a significant difference only in E1 and E2 for both take-off style in all the measured one.
Fifth, significantly high muscle activity was observed in left biceps femoris and medial gastrocnemius in the run-up section and in right rectus femoris and tibialis anterior in the run-up section for hop-step style jump and right rectus femoris, right and left biceps femoris, and medial gastrocnemius in the take-off section for closed-step style jump.
Sixth, a significant increase in maximum horizontal ground reaction force was observed in the right foot in closed-step style jump.
The results of this study are expected to provide information on the difference in take-off style to volleyball club members and life sports leaders through the quantification of spike motion according to the two take-off style and to contribute to improvement of the spike skills of club members in the future.
