A Study on Redemptive-Historical Preaching Using Kevin Vanhoozer's 'Drama of Doctrine' Perspective - Focusing on the Ruth
This study is set in a Redemptive-Historical Preaching sermon. The preaching movement, which began in the 1930s Netherlands, criticized both the human-centered moral and psychological sermons of the time and the doctrinal sermons from the 17th century Protestant Scholarism. At the same time, This movement took an exclusive position on exemplaristic sermon, claiming that the essence of preaching was Christ-centered preaching. The exemplaristic sermon insisted that the Redemptive-Historical Preaching should be essential also it’s a comprehensive position that the exemplary approach at the same time should be allowed. This debate took place in South Korea in the late 1990s. However, The aspect was the opposite in South Korea. Redemptive-Historical preachers were criticized. The opposite say that they are not faithful to the historical and literary commentary on the text of the sermon, but rather rush to find a Redemptive-Historical message. These discussions are likely to ignite in recent years. Tim Keller, who is expanding the horizon of influence in the Korean church, argued for a representative Redemptive-Historical preaching. However, preaching scholars, including Kim Chang-hoon, saw the risk of extreme bias in his Redemptive-Historical sermons. It can be seen that the debate on the Redemptive-Historical Preaching has continued. This is a problem that corresponds to the essence of the sermon and is causing a lot of confusion for preachers who believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ should be preached. The purpose of this study is to study Redemptive-Historical Preaching that accepts criticisms of Redemptive-Historical Preaching while acknowledging the contribution of Redemptive-Historical Preaching sermon. It is not incompatible as a conflicting proposition, but rather an integrated Redemptive-Historical Preaching that goes to opposite congruence. The beginning of integrated development was found in Kevin Vanhoozer, who introduced the Speech Act Theory. Therefore, I tried to overcome the limitations of the existing Redemptive-Historical preaching by studying Kevin Vanhoozer's "dramas of doctrine" and using this perspective in preaching. Therefore, the problem of the study is a Redemptive-Historical preaching study using Kevin Vanhoozer's 'dramas of doctrines'. In addition, in order to lead to actual Bible interpretation and sermon, examples of actual Bible interpretation and examples sermons of Ruth were presented. The method of this study is mainly literature research. The controversy of Redemptive-Historical preaching, advocates of Redemptive-Historical preaching in England and America, Sidney Greidanus, Edmund Clowney, Graeme Goldsworthy, Bryan Chapell, and Tim Keller's preaching theory and sermons were studied. It also studied Kevin Vanhoozer's major books for "The Drama of Doctrine." And it also studied an commentary on Ruth. The contents of this study are as follows. Chapter II briefly introduces the controversy over the Redemptive-Historical preaching that took place in the 1930‘s Netherlands and 2000’s Korea in order to understand the Redemptive-Historical preaching, and also research the definitions and characteristics of the Redemptive-Historical preaching. And It critically analyzes the contributions and problems of Redemptive-Historical preaching. In particular, problems are analyzed through four categories: theological, interpretive, preaching, and religious distortion and error. At this time, we look at the definitions and characteristics of Redemptive-Historical preaching in Chapter II, focusing on the advocates of Redemptive-Historical preaching in England and America, Sidney Greidanus, Edmund Clowney, Graeme Goldsworthy, Bryan Chapell, and Tim Keller', and analyze the problems of Redemptive-Historical preaching in Chapter II. Chapter Ⅲ research Kevin Vanhoozer's "Dramas of Doctrine" and analyzes the four characteristics. These four characteristics overcome and supplement theological, interpretive, preaching, and religious distortions and errors in Redemptive-Historical preaching. Chapter Ⅳ studies the Redemption-Historical preaching methodology using Vanhoozer's 'drama of doctrine'. The theology of Scientia and Sapientia, which is a theological method for raising hermeneutic questions and solving this problem, is a methodology that identifies the intention of God as the author and allows the reader, the saint, to appropriate the text. In Chapter Ⅴ, a case study of the Redemptive-Historical preaching process model using Vanhoozer's 'drama of doctrine' and sermons as the drama of God's redemption was conducted. First, Ruth 1, 2, 3, 4 are commented at the Scientia level. And at the Sapientia level, it appropriately transforms the life of today's audience and allows the saints to perform it in life. This process was captured in the sermon plan and an example was presented in an actual sermon. This study introduces Vanhoozer's research as practical theology, and is particularly meaningful in that it attempted to materialize in preaching. As an early example of the introduction of the Speech-Act theory in Redemptive-Historical preaching, it will be possible to urge many studies of the Speech-Act theory in preaching in the future. In the future, understanding of linguistics and sociology should be introduced into practical theology. In-depth studies should be conducted on the spirituality, community, tradition, and culture formed by the Word of God, with a deeper understanding of the most basic language of preaching. And I hope that more follow-up studies will continue on the church as a language community, the doctrine and sermon as a custom.
