This study observed the teacher's self-supervision process, and the changes of teachers and children to support children's physical play as research on the self-supervision of teachers to support physical play for 3-year-old children. It is meaningful in suggesting the meaning of teachers' self-supervision on site and supporting direction appropriately by understanding children's physical play. The research issues of this study are as follows.
Question 1. How is making the process and meaning exploration of the teacher's self-supervision to support physical play for 3-year-old children?
Question 2. What is the teachers' change through the process and meaning exploration of the teacher's self-supervision to support physical play for 3-year-old children?
Question 3. What is the children's change through the process and meaning exploration of the teacher's self-supervision to support physical play for 3-year-old children?
This study was conducted from August 26 to October 28, 2022, at a kindergarten attached to J in Seoul for about ten weeks, participating with six children of 3-year-olds. Participants in this study were 1 class teacher who is a researcher in this study and six children in Sprout 1 class. For this study, audio and video recording of play situations, child physical play observation and play support record sheet, physical play support efficacy evaluation, record sheets of sharing opinions on physical play, child representative data, researchers' journals, conceptual networks of physical play, and checklists of play support were collected and analyzed. The data collection list was prepared by referring to the qualitative research analysis procedure of Kim Young-Cheon (2016) and advanced research on self-supervision (Ji-Eun Kim, 2016; Soo-Yeon Oh, 2022; Eun-Young Yoo, 2016; Hyun-Jin Jeong, 2018)". It repeatedly explored the patterns and meanings in transcribing and reading the collected data. Then, it conducted open coding by expressing them in short phrases that can be depicted compressively. Afterward, it went through in-depth coding to select data that fit the direction of the study and to identify and connect the relationship between words and phrases. Finally, it was organized into the final category by deriving the implied meaning and central theme. The result of the above process was presented as the self-supervision process and the change of teachers and children as follows.
First, the researcher's self-supervision process was indicated to be 'looking into my thoughts on the physical play,' 'improving factors that hinder physical play,' 'broadening the horizon of understanding physical play,' and 'providing environmental support for vitalization of physical play.' This process involves recognizing problems, planning and implementing problem improvement plans, and evaluating. Furthermore, these processes were not disconnected but rather cyclic processes that reflected the evaluation of the previous step of self-supervision, leading to the next phase of self-supervision. Second, there were indicated through the teachers' self-supervision process to support physical play for 3-year-old children, changes as teachers who understood the role of teachers as play supporters, teachers who practice the curriculum created with children, and teachers with high efficacy in physical play. Third, the changes in children appeared through the teachers' self-supervision process to support physical play for 3-year-old children into children who feel competence and joy through physical play, children who practice physical play of spring-up ideas, and children who experience learning through physical play. As stated above, this study conducted self-supervision research to support the physical play of 3-year-old children, who have a high fascination and interest in physical play and occupy a large proportion of the play. Through this research, the correct practice of the children and play-oriented curriculum in the field was suggested by comprehensively understanding the play of 3-year-old children and providing appropriate play support for development, fascination, and interest. Furthermore, this study has significant meaningful that it presents the direction and plan of support that can help the early childhood education field with similar concerns by conducting self-supervision research to support physical play, which has yet to be performed since the 2019 revised Nuri course. Accordingly, this study demonstrated the importance of self-supervision as a practical method of high-quality early childhood education by recognizing and improving problems in the field identified by teachers. Furthermore, it implied that it could be an effective operation method of expandable physical play support by observing children's play in the early childhood education field and understanding the play's meaning.
