The period of elementary school students is rich in emotional plasticity. However, because of the unexpectedly prolonged COVID-19 situation, the current fourth grade of elementary school has developed a gap in social-emotional development due to the non-face-to-face educational environment from the lower grades. Therefore, this study aimed to improve EI, reduce Stress, and improve Teacher Attachment by devising conversation-based bibliotherapy therapy to foster EI in the fourth grade of elementary school students. For this study, the experimental design was applied to the pre-post-test control group design. The study subjects were 23 fourth-grade elementary school students living in Seoul and hoping to participate in the program; 12 students in the experimental group, and 11 students in the control group. The experimental group participated in the program once a week from the fourth week of July to the fifth week of October 2022, for a total of 12 sessions and 50 minutes once a week, but the block class was conducted for 80 minutes depending on the content. This program was a one-on-one bibliotherapy program conducted by the researcher visiting a child's home. No treatment was given to the control group, and only two tests were participated in July and October. The data obtained through the program's pre-post-test were averaged and standard deviations through the IBM SPSS 26.0 statistical program, and nonparametric statistical tests, Mann-Whitney U tests, and Wilcoxon code ranking tests, were performed to test the homogeneity test between the two groups and the effect of independent variables. In addition, qualitative analysis was conducted to supplement the reliability of quantitative research. Qualitative research was analyzed as a case study method using emic coding that classifies participants' languages as subject words, and reconstructed into a researcher's journal, a reflective journal containing the researcher’s enlightenment and perception. The statistical analysis results were as follows: First, in the conversation-based Bibliotherapy program for cultivating EI, there was no significant difference in emotional recognition, expression, and empathy, which are sub-variables of EI compared to the control group, but there was a significant difference in emotional thinking, use, and emotional control. Second, in conversation-based bibliotherapy programs for cultivating EI, there was no significant difference in Stress reduction between the two groups. Third, in the conversation-based bibliotherapy program for cultivating EI, the experimental group and the control group did not show significant differences in accessibility, sensitivity, and acceptance, which are sub-variables of Teacher Attachment, but showed a significant difference in reliability. As a result of qualitative research, the main words were derived as 'EI', 'Stress', and 'Teacher Attachment', and emic-coded into three grand categories, middle categories, and 10 subcategories, and case analysis was performed. Emic means the inside of a special and unique participant, and emic coding shows the perspective of the participant. For this purpose, participatory observation (Experiencing), in-depth interviewing(Enquirying), and local data (Examining) were collected and analyzed. The qualitative research was as follows: First, I, you, and understood our feelings and deepened our understanding of emotions. Instead of looking at love, like, fear, sadness, and anger as the phenomenon itself, they read the feelings and thoughts of themselves and others behind it. In this process, Students experienced identification, catharsis, and purification with the person in the bibliotherapy program. Second, Students sought an adaptive change between themselves and the environment. Third, Students felt more of an attachment to the research as a teacher who could be approached by children and understood their minds. In summary, this program expanded the knowledge of emotional vocabulary for fourth graders with abundant emotional plasticity, deepened the level of self-openness by forming a rapport with a researcher, and children gained insight into emotions through picture books and songs, the media used in the program. As a result, it can be seen that it positively affected cultivating emotional intelligence and forming a trusting relationship with a teacher, which is the basis of Teacher Attachment. In the future, it is recommended to develop emotional programs so that children can grow into psychologically strong adults without psychological trauma.
