The Quadruped robots are excellent mobile robot with the ability to move on uneven terrain. This is a great advantage of the quadruped robot. However, the control is difficult because of the high degree of freedom and the discontinuous change of the robot support area. Therefore, locomotion control has been extensively studied. This paper introduces a real-time locomotion control framework of a quadruped robot and proposes a novel slip detection method to improve body position estimation performance on uneven and soft terrain. The locomotion control framework consists of state estimation, reference state generation, and tracking control. State estimation such as body state estimation, foot contact detection, and foot slip detection is necessary to control the robot based on the current robot state. As reference state, Antero-posterior sequence(APS) based gait pattern, Model Predictive Control (MPC) based reference body trajectory, and Quintic polynomial leg trajectory are used. As tracking control, the body tracks the trajectory with leg force control through Quadratic Programming(QP) based on a single rigid body model. And we control the legs through inverse dynamics control. The locomotion control framework and slip detection were verified from walking experiments on uneven and soft terrain with a quadruped robot ‘Pongbot’ weighing about 40 kg.
