Because cities are concentrated in many buildings, roads, vehicles, and populations, a wide variety of pollutants, such as heavy metals, organic compounds, and microplastics can be derived from that. Recently, the types of microplastics detected in urban effluent were paint, cigarette butts, tire fragments, plastic food and beverage containers, and laundry-derived fibers. However, there are few existing toxicity studies because paint particles and the filters of cigarette butts are beginning to be considered microplastics. Recently, for a pleasant urban landscape, each local government in domestic has introduced paint mixed with polyvinyl chloride(PVC) powder and has been painted the electric power poles. Although the urban street landscape looks cleaner due to the inability to put flyers on the power poles, this paint can affect nearby soil ecosystem via mechanical weathering over time. In this study, the toxic effect of paint particles and PVC particles by single and a mixture to the plant(Vigna radiata) was examined, and whether the toxicity of paint increases when PVC particles are added was compared and analyzed. V. radiata was chronically exposed to fine particles of PVC(152 µm), Paint(167 µm) and Paint+PVC(123 µm) for 28 days. The results showed that Paint and Paint+PVC fine particles had a significant adverse effect on the photosynthetic efficiency and oxidative stress(polyphenol contents) of V. radiata, and had a growth inhibition and a visible effect such as black spots on the leaves and fallen leaves. Paint+PVC exposure group had been more toxicity on the photosynthetic efficiency and oxidative stress of V. radiata. Previously, the toxicity studies of cigarette butts has mainly dealt with the effects on various chemicals such as nicotine, tar, and carcinogens contained in cigarettes. However, recently, cellulose acetate fiber filters, which are used to lower smokers' inhalation of harmful substances in cigarettes, have begun to be recognized as a source of microplastics. It is estimated that about 4.5 trillion cigarette butts flow into the natural environment annually because many smokers throw cigarette butts just directly into the streets. Harmful substances in cigarette butts can be leached via precipitation and urban runoff, and filters in cigarette butts can be refined through mechanical weathering and exist in the surrounding soil environment. Therefore, in this study, the toxic effect was examined by exposing to the soil algae(Chlorococcum infusionum) the leachate of the cigarette butt filter, a filter with only cellulose acetate fibers filter, and a filter with cellulose acetate fibers and activated carbon with an average diameter of 28 µm and a length of 1 mm. Six days after exposure, the biomass and photosynthesis efficiency related to electron transport of soil algae exposed to cigarette butts leachate and micro-filters significantly decreased, and in particular, soil algae directly exposed to cigarette butts micro-filters were found to be almost fatal. The results of this study are significant in that they can form the basis for future research on the effects of microplastics exposure from paint materials and cigarette butts that have become part of everyday urban life. It was concluded that in the soil environment not only the toxicity of the paint itself, but also the accumulated toxicity effects when mixed with microplastics such as PVC and the toxicity effects of cigarette butt filters as microplastics need to be managed for a long time and further measures.
