As labor shortages in the agriculture increased, the need for agricultural automation increased, and smart farm that can manage and harvest crops using robots and control systems have emerged. In particular, a lot of research have been conducted on robot end-effectors that can harvest fruit. An end-effector that separates the stem and branch of a fruit by imitating a human hand is called a plucking gripper. The plucking gripper grips the fruit, rotates it in a direction perpendicular to the stem, and then pulls it. This paper aims to develop a plucking soft gripper capable of harvesting tomatoes without damaging them. A hybrid adaptive soft gripper and an elephant’s nose-inspired soft gripper are proposed. Previous soft grippers are effective in handling soft fruit without damage, but have a disadvantage in that they are made of flexible materials and have weak gripping and holding power during the gripping process. A hybrid adaptive soft gripper with both flexibility and robustness is designed by using silicon and plastic together to compensate for the lack of gripping force and fixing force, which are the disadvantages of the existing soft gripper. The elephant’s nose-inspired soft gripper is proposed to apply suction force and gripping force to an object by imitating the gripping mechanism of an elephant trunk. The hybrid adaptive soft gripper flexibly adapts to the atypical surface of tomatoes and applies gripping force. The soft gripper that mimics the elephant's nose is made by casting with silicon. The negative pressure is applied into the bellows circular suction cup, to adhere closely to the curved surface of the tomato. And the positive pressure is applied into the inner chamber of the wing to cover and grip the surface of the tomato to enable plucking. Based on the harvesting data and previous studies in tomato farms, the design parameters of the gripper required to harvest tomatoes without damage were determined. The design variables of the gripper are gripping force, pulling force, and plucking torque, and the pulling force that the gripper can withstand when harvesting tomatoes is set to be 6N to 20N and the flocking torque to be around 2.2Nm. The pulling force is measured to evaluate the gripping performance of the proposed grippers. The hybrid adaptive soft gripper is able to withstand a maximum of 19.03N and the elephant’s nose-inspired soft gripper is able to withstand a maximum of 20.01N. After evaluating the gripping performance of each gripper, an actual tomato harvesting experiment is conducted. Whether the top and branch of the tomato were separated and whether there was any damage to the tomato during the harvesting process are defined as harvest success criteria. As a result of the experiment, both grippers are successful in grasping and harvesting. The hybrid adaptive soft gripper showed a maximum of 1.71 Nm and the elephant’s nose-inspired soft gripper showed a maximum of 1.36 Nm of plucking torque. Both grippers satisfied the design parameters for pulling force, and it was confirmed that harvesting was possible even if the plucking torque did not reach 2.2 Nm. The two proposed plucking soft grippers are expected to be used for actual tomato harvesting by applying them to harvesting using robots.
