The Effect of Evergreen Ground-cover Plants on Phytostabilization for Microplastics Contaminated Roadside Soils원문보기

This study was conducted to assess the degree of tire wear particles(TWPs) contamination in roadside soils and investigate the possibility and effectiveness of using evergreen ground-cover plants. Qualitative and quantitative levels of TWPs in roadside soils was investigated, depending on traffic volume and distance from the road. The changes in soil properties, as well as the growth responses of Liriope platyphylla and Pachysandra terminalis was evaluated, in relation to different TWPs concentration treatments. Also, the mass of TWPs detected in the runoff water was compared to validate the effectiveness and potential of phytostabilization. Particles with characteristics of TWPs were identified in the soils of all experimental sites. Through the comparison of FT-IR spectra, it was determined that these particles were indeed TWPs. The detected amount of TWPs showed a relationship with traffic volume and distance from the road, indicating that higher traffic volume and closer to the road were associated with higher levels of TWPs contamination in roadside soil. When comparing the concentrations of TWPs across five treatments (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 g·kg-1), no significant differences were observed in soil acidity but electrical conductivity and soil water content, which also affected the growth of plants. Liriope platyphylla exhibited positive growth responses to the treatment with 0.5 g·kg-1, while Pachysandra terminalis with 0.25 g·kg-1 of TWPs. In the treatment groups where Liriope platyphylla and Pachysandra terminalis were planted, a small amount of TWPs in the runoff water was detected compared with soil control. Liriope platyphylla planted pots showed lower TWPs leaching compared to Pachysandra terminalis planted pots, which was attributed to the root growth of Liriope platyphylla. Based on these results, it can be inferred that roadside soils are contaminated with TWPs, and the contamination level is expected to be higher with increased traffic volume and closer proximity to the road. Furthermore, both Liriope platyphylla and Pachysandra terminalis exhibited resistance to TWPs and attributed to immobilization of TWPs within soil. This suggests the potential of phytostabilization in TWPs contaminated soils. In particular, Liriope platyphylla not only exhibited well growth response but also reduced the mobility of TWPs within roadside soil. Therefore, it is considered a relatively suitable plant for stabilizing TWPs contaminated soils. Further research is needed to explore the application potential of various plant species and investigate other remediation mechanisms using plants.
