This study is a paralled group randomized controlled trial to compare the effects of 1 week music listening and aroma essential oil inhalation on stress, quality of life, and happiness for shift nurses. The subjects of this study were shift nurse. The data collection period of the study was from August 1, 2022 to August 31, 2022. In order to prevent contamination of the experiment, data were collected in the order of control group, music group, and aroma group. Prior to data collection, it was approved by the Institutional Bioethics Review Committee of E University(EU22-36). Using the G-power 3.1.9 program, the sample size was set to effect size 25.5, two-sided test power .95, significance level .05, number of groups 3, and number of measurements 2. As a result of calculating the number of samples, a total of 66 people were needed(22 people per group). considering the dropout rate of 20%, a total of 78 people were needed(26 people per group). No subjects were eliminated during the experiment. The experimental treatment was to provide music therapy for one week to the music group and aroma therapy for one week to the aroma group, and the control group was allowed to live daily life for one week. Music therapy means that among the 'Isotonic Sound Series' songs created by Dalla and Sound Media, 15 songs are first selected after consultation with musicians, and 7 songs are selected secondly by the research subject, and then listen to music for 30 minutes. Aromatherapy means that three drops of aroma essential oil blended with lavender, ylang ylang, and lemon at 5:5:1 fill the aroma necklace and inhale it for 3 minutes 5-10cm from the nose, then wear the aroma necklace and place it within 30cm of the head to continue to inhale. Measurements were performed twice in total before the experimental treatment and one week after the experimental treatment for both the experimental group and the control group. Stress was measured with a stress measurement tool developed by Park Soon-young, and the stress index was measured with a pulse rate meter (Canopy9 RAS, IEMBIOCO., Gangwon-do, Korea). The quality of life was measured using the Korean version of the quality of life equilibrium scale modified and supplemented by Min Sung-gil and others. Happiness was measured by a happiness measurement tool that revised and supplemented the Oxford happiness measurement scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS statistics 26.0. The homogeneity verification of the general characteristics and pre-dependent variables between the three groups was analyzed by χ2-test and ANOVA. The post-effect according to time change was analyzed by Repeated measures ANOVA, and the post-hoc test was analyzed by Scheffe or Duncan. There was no significant difference in both general characteristics and dependent variable verification before the experimental treatment, so homogeneity between the three groups was secured. The results one week after the experimental treatment were as follows. 1) Part 1 of the first hypothesis was supported, "There will be a difference in subjective stress between the music group applied with music therapy, the aroma group applied with aroma therapy, and the control group." (F=5.551, p=.006). 2) Part 2 of the first hypothesis was partially supported, "There will be a difference in objective stress between the music group applied with music therapy, the aroma group applied with aroma therapy, and the control group applied with aroma therapy." (F=3.380, p=.039). 3) The second hypothesis was supported, "There will be a difference in the quality of life of the music group applied with music therapy, the aroma group applied with aroma therapy, and the control group applied with aroma therapy." (F=11.793, p<.001). 4) The third hypothesis was supported, "There will be a difference in happiness between the music group applied with music therapy, the aroma group applied with aroma therapy, and the control group applied with aroma therapy." (F=9.292, p<.001). In other words, music therapy and aroma therapy had the effect of reducing the stress of shift nurses and improving the quality of life and happiness. From the above research results, it is thought that music therapy and aroma therapy can be used as general nursing interventions effective in reducing stress and improving the quality of life and happiness of shift nurses.
