While previous research have been active in finding the explanatory factors of fear of crime, only a small number of researchers have attempted to identify the relationships between them, exploring the process of how fear of crime is formed. To fill this gap, the current study seeks to examine how various explanatory factors affect fear of crime, emphasizing the mediation effect of perceived vulnerability (Killias, 1990), in particular. By concentrating on the formation process as well as the causality, we could come up with various prevention and control strategies regarding fear of crime, depending on how one’s fear of crime is formed. Concretely, this study (1) explores whether victimization, sex, age, and social media usage have indirect effects on fear of social media-based crime through perceived vulnerability, (2) examines which of the specific elements of perceived vulnerability convey the indirect effects, and (3) assesses whether these results differ by crime types: ‘general crimes’ and ‘sexual violence and stalking’. A survey data of 1,000 samples from the Study on Crimes and Policy Responses in Social Media, collected by the Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice in 2013 were analyzed, using path analyses via AMOS 23.0 and the Sobel test. The results provide several implications. Firstly, this study discovered that the factors which were used to explain fear of crime offline (i.e., victimization and vulnerability hypotheses, opportunity theory) can still be applied in the new context of social media-based crime. In both Model 1 (General crime) and Model 2 (Sexual crime and stalking), all independent variables except age had a significant effect on the dependent variable. Secondly, in both Models 1 and 2, the elements of perceived vulnerability had a greater impact on the dependent variables than the independent variables. This finding is consistent with one of the major arguments of this study. That is, the objective and subjective aspects of vulnerability must be distinguished from each other. In addition, it suggests that explanatory models that only consist of the objective aspect (i.e. demographic variables) are likely to be insufficient and that they should, henceforth, incorporate subjective traits such as perceived vulnerability. Thirdly, there were not many significant paths regarding the relationships between independent variables and mediators, unexpectedly. Instead, some logical explanations were suggested as to why. Finally, despite the sparseness of statistical significances, some important implications could be derived from some of the statistically significant paths. One of them involves the finding that in both Models 1 and 2, perceived seriousness of consequences was influenced by sex. This may be one way to explain the so-called ‘victimization-fear paradox’. Another important finding was that victimization influenced perceived exposure to risk only in Model 2, holding an indirect effect on fear of sexual violence and stalking as well. This can be interpreted as indicative of the gravity of sexual violence and stalking compared to other crime types. As mentioned earlier, neutralization techniques used by victims are likely to weaken the impact of victimization, which could be the reason why Model 1 did not have a significant effect on perceptions of exposure to risk. However, considering the significant results in Model 2, in the case of sexual violence and stalking, the neutralization techniques may not be so effective.
