The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of Gestalt relational group counseling on empathy, inability to express emotions, self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships in college students. The subject of the study is a university student at S University located in B city. The treatment group consisted of 26 students of ‘Group Counseling’, which was opened as a major selection within the department related to counseling. The study subjects of the control group were 52 university students from the same school as the treatment group and counseling-related departments or similar majors. The treatment group participated in Gestalt relationship group counseling once a week, each time for 90 minutes, for a total of 6 weeks, and the control group did not receive any treatment. The empathy scale, the alexithymia scale, the self-esteem scale, and the interpersonal response scale were used as measurement tools to verify the effectiveness of group counseling. To verify the effectiveness of Gestalt group counseling, the differences in post hoc scores between groups were summarized by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), and to more clearly confirm the effectiveness of the treatment group that conducted Gestalt relational group counseling, the response A sample t analysis was performed. The results of this study are as follows. First, the group that participated in Gestalt relationship group counseling showed a significantly higher score on empathy than the group that did not participate. In other words, it can be seen that Gestalt relationship group counseling is effective in improving the empathy of university students. Second, the group that participated in the Gestalt relational group counseling showed a significantly higher score for the difficulty level of emotional skills than the group that did not participate. In other words, it can be seen that Gestalt relationship group counseling is effective in improving the level of difficulty in emotional skills of university students. Third, the group that participated in Gestalt relational group counseling showed a significantly higher score on self-esteem than the group that did not participate. In other words, it can be seen that Gestalt relational group counseling is effective in improving the self-esteem of college students. Fourth, the group that participated in Gestalt relational group counseling had significantly higher overall scores for 'interpersonal response' and the scores for perspective acceptance and emotional resonance, which are sub-factors, than the group that did not participate. In other words, it can be seen that Gestalt relationship group counseling is effective in improving the overall score and sub-factors (perspective acceptance, emotional resonance) of university students' interpersonal relationships. On the other hand, in the case of the sub-factor of inability to express emotions (difficulty in recognizing emotions) and the sub-factor of interpersonal relationships (empathic interest) in the treatment group that conducted Gestalt relational group counseling, the difference between the pre- and post-scores was not statistically significant.
