This study aims to objectively verify the effects of body expression activities, including literature, language, and arts, using children’s picture books by maximizing the strengths of meta-analysis.
The research questions are as follows.
Research question 1. How much do children’s picture books generally affect body expression activities, including literature, language, and arts?
1-1. How much do children’s picture books affect each activity such as body expression, literature, language, and arts activities? 1-2. How much do dependent variables affect body expression activities, including literature, language, and arts, using picture books for preschoolers?
Research question 2. How different are dependent variables of body expression activities, including literature, language, and arts, according to types of picture books, types of activities, types of organizations, ages of preschoolers, the number of times in treatment, the duration of treatment, and the number of experiment & control groups?
Through meta-analysis, this study investigated the comprehensive effects of body expressions, including literature, language, and arts, using children's picture books. The first study on picture books began with Lee's (1986) study on children's picture books and illustrations. (Sim, 2019) Since 1996, every year has produced a couple of studies on picture books for preschoolers. Many studies were carried out on this topic between 2001 and 2003, affected by increased publications of children's picture books in the 1990s. In this background, young children have been exposed to more picture books, and studies on children's picture books have risen. (Kim, 2022) In particular, more and more graduate school students have become interested in picture book studies, resulting in a larger number of graduate school theses and dissertation papers than academic journals. Accordingly, it is necessary to figure out the research trend in published papers on children's picture books. Thus, the scope of this paper is ranged from graduate school theses and dissertations as well as academic journals in Korea published between 2000 and 2021, which is about the effects of body expression activities, including literature, language, and art using picture books, by the time when these subjects are gaining popularity. Data collection is based on PICOS, generally used when analyzing targets to review the previous research literature on body expression activities, including literature, language, and arts, using picture books. P stands for Population, targeting 3 to 5 years old toddlers; I for Intervention or programs dealing with academic papers on the topics mentioned above; C stands for comparison, limiting comparison grounds not participated in the experiment; and O for the outcome, selecting as dependent variables for child development such as linguistic, cognitive, social-emotional and physical development. S stands for study design. The researcher selected articles with quantified mean values, standard deviations, and t-values. To sort out and collect every academic paper on body expression activities, including literature, language, and literature using picture books, the researcher employed KISS, DBpia, and the national assembly library for data collection. Data analysis standards were thoroughly reviewed by an adviser in early childhood education who has done meta-analysis studies after discussing moderators and dependent variables to verify reliability and validity. Thirty papers on literature activities, 56 on linguistic activities, 13 on arts activities, and 14 on physical activities were selected for the final target for analysis. For data coding for academic paper analysis, a doctor in early childhood development verified whether the coding was correct using the EXCEL program when typing in the information on the research data. For the analysis instrument, CMA 2.0 program, meta-analysis specialized software developed in 2008 by US company Biostat.
Research findings on the overall effect size, each effect size on different activities, and the effect size of dependent variables about body expression activities, including literature, language, and arts using picture books, can be summarized as follows. First, the overall effect size of body expression activities, including literature, language, and arts, using children's picture books is significantly large. Literature is the biggest in terms of each effect size per different activities, followed by arts, body expression, and language activities. For the effect size of dependent variables, literature activities showed the highest cognitive development, language & arts activities for social development and physical expression for cognitive development. The results are in the same line with the previous literature (Kim, 2009, Hong, 2009), indicating picture books are effective on a child's cognitive and social development. Second, on the moderator effect analyses on literature activities using children's picture books, omnibus styles of picture books have the largest effect size. Still, there was no significant difference between the groups. Regarding toddlers' age, a four-year-old child has a more substantial effect than a three-year-old or five-year-old child. The frequency of treatment was highly effective, between 11 and 15 times, and 5th week was the highest for the treatment duration. Yet no significant difference in activity types, organization types, and the number of participants in treatment & comparison groups. Third, moderator effect analyses on linguistic activities using children's picture books, picture books focusing on building characters have the most significant effect size, but there was no difference between groups. Activities discussing stories have the most significant effect size for the type of activities. Children's daycare center was the most prominent effect size to the kind of organization. The duration of treatment was the most effective when the period was more than ten weeks. Yet there was no significant difference in children's ages, the number of times in treatment, and the number of participants in the experiment & comparison groups. Fourth, moderator effect analyses on art activities using children's picture books, the type of picture books focusing on building characters has the most effective size, but there was no difference between groups. For the highest effect size, a three-year-old child for the toddler's age, the number of treatments is less than 16 to 20 times, and the experiment group consists of 20 to 21 participants; the comparison groups were less than 19. Yet there was no significant difference between the activities, the types of organizations, and the treatment period. Fifth, moderator effect analyses on body expression activities using children's picture books, the omnibus style of picture books has the most effective size. Daycare centers have a larger effect size than kindergartens in terms of organization types. For the highest effect size, the number of treatments is less than 16 to 20 times, and the experience period was less than seven weeks. Yet there was no significant difference between types of activities, toddlers' ages, and the number of experiment & comparison groups. These research findings verified the effects of body expression activities, including literature, language, and art activities, when using children's picture books. This research is meaningful because the researcher comprehensively and objectively analyzed the result. This study can be used as essential reference materials for guidelines to plan activities using picture books and teach according to them to help the effects last longer.
