Due to water shortage phenomena caused by water pollution and climate change, total organic carbon (TOC) standards are implemented when discharging wastewater from public sewage treatment facilities, and research and interest are increasing in reuse of sewage treatment water to secure alternative water resources. However, the MBR process using the separation membrane (MF) needs to be improved to a state more suitable for water treatment by applying microbubbles due to the frequent membrane contamination (fouling) phenomenon caused by the mixed liquid suspended solid (MLSS). In the study of "emulsion separation using microbubbles", in order to achieve fundamental waste reduction through precise oil flow separation of water-soluble waste cutting oil, microbubbles, which are improved from the existing DAF method, are used, i) In the process of emulsion separation, rapid processing speed and reduced emulsion agents usage, ii) simultaneously removed non-biodegradable substances (CODMn, n-Hexane extractable material (n-H), alkyl benzene sulfonate (ABS). The COD, n-H extractable material, and ABS concentrations of treated water were analyzed. In the application of agents and microbubbles, the removal rates of CODMn and n-H extractable material with microbubble increased by 18 to 41% and 63 to 76%, respectively, compared to the non-applied one. In the study of "reducing fouling of separators using microbubbles", in order to improve the differential pressure rise, decrease in water flow, and fouling of the membrane, which were the biggest disadvantage of operating the MF, the microbubble generator was operated and non-operated every 15 days for 5 months to collect a discharge water sample (4L) and measure the TOC concentration. By applying microbubbles to the supernatant water through the settling tank, the differential pressure of the separator was reduced by 1.6 to 2.3 times and the water flow was increased by up to 1.4 times. With microbubble application, TOC was removed at an average of 58.6%. This is caused by the attaching of microbubbles to organic matter on the film surface, weakening the adhesion between the film surface and particles, and cleaning the surface of the particles while rising and then, disappearing with organic matter. Applying suitable emulsion agent depending on the size of the treated water flock can be reduced the coagulation and separation time, also the fouling of MF can be reduced by separately operating the aeration tank and the separation membrane tank. Additionally, applying microbubbles (30 μm) can improve the phenomenon in the increased differential pressure, decreased water flow, and fouling. It can contribute to the efficient operation of the advanced treatment method that can be processed in large quantities by extending the life of the separator, reducing costs and easily maintenance, instead of frequent replacement of the separator.
