Peer relationships during early childhood are crucial as it is the period when peer groups are formed. In early childhood, peer relationships are formed in situations where they play together, and most children learn and develop through play. As such, play is important not only for young children but also for children with disabilities as well. For young children with disabilities, play with peers in inclusive classrooms can be an appropriate venue to enhance peer relationships with young children. Particularly since its revision in 2020, the "Revised 2019 Nuri- Curriculum" places a strong emphasis on a ’child-centered‘ and ’play-based‘ approach. It highlights the importance of respecting each child's individual play style and emphasizes that teachers should actively support children in engaging and learning through play. With regard to the result of this study, there is a growing need for a classroom approach that can accommodate all young children, and it is expected to have a positive effect on acceptance and social integration. Based on this need, in this study, we planned to implement peer-mediation through the use of preference-based play activities for peers and disabled children in inclusive education. In addition, this study conducted this research in a classroom setting and planned to investigate the impact on the acceptance of children with disabilities by their peers, as well as the effects of peer interactions of children with disabilities. To this end, the study conducted a group design study by dividing G preschool inclusive classrooms and J preschool inclusive classrooms, both located in Seoul, into an experimental group and a control group. To compare and analyze the pretest-posttest in the two groups, this study conducted an independent sample t-test to determine the acceptance of young children with disabilities by peers, and a case study was conducted to determine the changes in peer interactions of young children with disabilities. Prior to implementing the intervention, preschool teachers and special education teachers conducted observations and individual interviews to select the preference play style of all students in the class. The peer mediation consisted of whole-group activities for peer education and small-group activities for peer play. Peer education included the importance of peer play, methods of peer play, role play, and modeling, and was conducted in three sessions. Peer play was conducted a total of 15 times, with one peer instructor and the class split into groups of four to five peers forming a team for each play activity. Play teams participated in the preference play of one peer instructor, and peer mediation lasted 15 minutes per session and was conducted three times a week. After each peer play session, they exchanged feedback in the form of photos, videos, and conversations. Then a new peer instructor was selected, formed a play team, and repeated the process of peer play. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, when implementing a classwide peer mediation using play preference, there was a statistically significant difference in the degree of change from pre-test to post-test in the acceptance of young children with disabilities by peer in the experimental and control groups. Second, when implementing a classwide peer mediation using play preference to examine the effects of peer interactions on young children with disabilities in an experimental group, although there were individual differences between each child, there was a modest increase after the mediation began. Given the findings, it can be concluded that classwide peer mediation using play preference is effective in increasing the acceptance of young children with disabilities by peers and bringing about positive changes in the peer interactions of young children with disabilities. This study is significant in that it implemented classroom-wide peer mediation for young children in a classroom setting and it can be considered effective since it was conducted in inclusive classrooms. In particular, this study is significant in that it gave young children with disabilities a role while it included these children in participating as a peer instructor, in addition to their peers. Additionally, it was significant in this study that each young child in the classroom selected their preferred play style and used it for peer mediation.
