Korea has established reliable sewerage infrastructures through continuous investment and various policy initiatives. However, the management of sewerage systems during rainfall lacks systematic measures and provisions. Therefore, this study examined the maintenance priorities considering economic feasibility and practicality, for reduction plans for RDII(Rainfall-Derived Infiltration and Inflow) in urban areas with a combination of sanitary and combined sewer systems. The study analyzed sewage generation characteristics through flow and water quality investigation at 11 monitoring points and calculated infiltration and inflow, which were used as the basis for calculating RDII generation and determining target areas for maintenance. SSOAP(Sanitary Sewer Overflow Analysis and Planning) and XP-SWMM simulations were used as tools for RDII prediction. To improve model accuracy and reliability, careful calibration and verification process was carried out at each monitoring point by using actual measurement data. A representative rainfall of 47.5mm was derived by applying a daily accumulation probability of 90%. The rainfall duration for simulation was determined by 24 hours through IETD(Inter Event Time Definition) analysis, and calculated the rainfall distribution using the ABM(alternating block method). For the RDII reduction plan, the overall sewerage system was examined by dividing it into the collection, transfer, and treatment processes and selecting scenarios for each. The RDII reduction effect for each stage based on the following scenarios was examined: (1) in the collection stage, conversion to a sanitary sewer system that improves the branch pipeline maintenance and sewerage pipeline systems in watersheds where infiltration is high; (2) in the transfer stage, maintenance of pipelines buried under rivers and streams and interceptor pipelines where the infiltration rate is high; and (3) in the treatment stage, expansion of public sewage treatment facilities and the review of sewage storage facilities. The prioritization of reduction plans differently based on RDII reductions and economic considerations was examined. The priorities of the maintenance plans varied when we considered realistic conditions, such as those of the sewage storage facility implementation plan where after storing, the entire amount of sewage must be treated by public sewage treatment facilities. As such, the RDII generation and its reduction plan priorities are influenced by various factors, such as regional characteristics, sewage facility status and operation characteristics, and policies. Therefore, when expanding the application of this study, it is necessary to establish a step-by-step reduction plan that fully considers the status and situation of sewage facilities based on actual data obtained through sewage facility monitoring.
